Dated reports instead describe six different situations: a departure from one long-running role, treatment breaks followed by a return, and people who said they could or hoped to keep working. A diagnosis alone does not show that someone has stopped acting.
Is there a verified list of 15 actors who are too sick to work?
No. The available reporting does not substantiate either a 15-person list or the claim that these actors are currently unable to work. It covers individual statements and career developments published from 2024 to 2025. Those reports support a narrower, more accurate account of what each person said about illness and work at that time.
What has been reported about illness and work?
| Person | Publicly reported condition and source date | Documented work effect or statement |
|---|---|---|
| Bryan Murray | Alzheimer’s diagnosis disclosed in 2019; RTÉ report, May 5, 2025 | RTÉ reported that Murray continued working with the condition until shortly before leaving his 27-year role as Bob Charles on Fair City. His partner, Úna Crawford O’Brien, said they had hoped he could act for as long as possible and had not discussed a point at which he would stop. The report documents his departure from that role, not a permanent end to all acting. |
| John J. York | Myelodysplastic syndromes and smoldering multiple myeloma; Soap Opera Digest interview, June 2024 | York took a hiatus from General Hospital after his December 2022 diagnoses and a blood stem-cell transplant. The June 2024 interview described his return to filming. |
| Aaron Lazar | ALS diagnosis in 2022; Playbill feature, July 17, 2024 | Lazar discussed fears that disclosing his diagnosis and becoming disabled could affect his career. The feature also described his public speaking and advocacy; it did not establish that he could no longer work. |
| Samantha Ruth Prabhu | Myositis; statements at India Today Conclave, reported March 15, 2024 | Prabhu said she had been very sick when she disclosed her condition and described taking a one-year break. She said, “I was forced to go public about my disorder.” Her statements describe that period, not a current inability to work. |
| Eric Dane | ALS diagnosis; CBS News report, April 11, 2025 | Dane said he was able to continue working and looked forward to returning to Euphoria. CBS also quoted him saying, “I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter.” |
| David Lynch | Emphysema; Reuters report, August 5, 2024 | Lynch described being homebound and able to walk only a short distance before running out of oxygen. He said he might direct remotely, though he disliked the idea, and rejected retirement. Reuters also reported his statement, “I have now quit smoking for over two years”; that was his account, not independent verification of his medical history. |
Does taking a break mean an actor has stopped working?
Not necessarily. A treatment hiatus, a time-limited break, a return to filming, and leaving a particular role are different career events. The dated accounts above show why those distinctions matter: York’s report describes a return after treatment, while Prabhu described a one-year break. Murray’s departure concerned one role; it does not establish that he was permanently unable to act.
How current are these work updates?
The latest report represented here is from April 2025, and the other accounts date from 2024 or May 2025. They document what was reported at those times; they do not establish any person’s work or health status in October 2026. Individual circumstances can change, so a current claim about whether someone is working would require a recent, attributable update.
