Absolution is a 2024 crime drama about an aging Boston gangster trying to reconnect with his children while the criminal world still holds him close. It stars Liam Neeson, is directed by Hans Petter Moland and runs 112 minutes. Streaming and home-video options depend on your country.
What is Absolution (2024) about?
Samuel Goldwyn Films describes the story this way: “An aging gangster attempts to reconnect with his children and rectify the mistakes in his past, but the criminal underworld won’t loosen their grip willingly.” Apple TV’s listing adds that Neeson’s character is an ex-boxer working as muscle for a Boston crime boss and receives an upsetting diagnosis; that detail comes from Apple TV’s synopsis.

The setup puts family reconciliation against the demands of a violent criminal life. The film is best approached as a character-led crime thriller rather than a promise of nonstop action: Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus points to sluggish pacing, even as it credits Neeson’s performance with redeeming the film somewhat.

Release dates differ by format and territory: Rotten Tomatoes lists November 19, 2024, as the streaming release date, while Metropolitan Films documents DVD and Blu-ray releases in its regional listings for January 10, 2025. That home-video date should not be taken as a worldwide release date.
Where to watch Absolution (2024)
Rotten Tomatoes lists Hulu and Disney+ among the film’s viewing options and also names Fandango for rental or purchase. Hulu and Disney+ have their own title pages as well. These listings do not guarantee that the film is currently available in every country; catalogues and rights can change. Check the service in your territory before subscribing or renting.
| Option | What the listings establish | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Streaming subscription | Hulu and Disney+ are listed by Rotten Tomatoes; both services have a title listing. | Whether the title is currently available in your country and under your plan. |
| Digital rental or purchase | Rotten Tomatoes lists Fandango as a rental/purchase option. | Current availability and price in your market. |
| DVD or Blu-ray | Metropolitan Films documents regional DVD and Blu-ray editions. | Whether the edition is sold in your country and plays on your equipment. |
The available listings do not establish a universal cheapest option. They also do not establish availability on every streaming service; check the service’s own catalogue rather than assuming a match.
DVD and Blu-ray edition details
Metropolitan Films documents both DVD and Blu-ray releases. Its Blu-ray listing specifies HD 1920×1080p video in a 2.39:1 aspect ratio, English and French audio, French subtitles, a 112-minute runtime and trailer extras. Those are details for the edition on that regional page, not a guarantee that every Blu-ray sold elsewhere has the same languages or extras.
Before buying, confirm the disc’s region compatibility, audio and subtitle options, seller and local availability. A regional release listing is not evidence that a particular retailer currently has stock.

Absolution is rated R. Apple TV lists violence, language throughout, some sexual content and nudity, and drug use among its content descriptors.
In a Rotten Tomatoes snapshot accessed in 2026, the film had a 56% Tomatometer score from 62 reviews and a 32% Popcornmeter score from 100+ verified ratings. These are the aggregator’s critic and audience measures at that time, not fixed ratings or a substitute for individual reviews. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus reads: “Liam Neeson’s gruff performance redeems Absolution somewhat, this thriller’s sluggish pacing may not fully earn audiences’ forgiveness.”
One review excerpt on the Rotten Tomatoes page comes from Jeannette Catsoulis of The New York Times, dated November 5, 2024. She wrote: “Neeson’s scenes with Shaw, who created and starred in the scrappy Showtime series “SMILF”, have a touching authenticity, and Ross’s character is so spiky and warm she offers relief from Punchy’s soggy self-centeredness.” That is Catsoulis’s individual assessment, not the aggregator’s consensus.
