Yes—Ableton Live 12.3 was released on November 25, 2025, as a free update for existing Live 12 users. It introduced built-in Stem Separation, but that feature is available only in Live Suite. Splice integration arrived in all Live 12.3 editions, and a free Splice account is enough to try its previews and available free samples. As of August 18, 2026, later Live 12 releases have superseded 12.3, so install the latest Live 12 build available to you rather than looking for 12.3 as the newest version.
What Live 12.3 added
Ableton announced Live 12.3 on November 25, 2025. Existing Live 12 owners could update at no additional charge. The update introduced two features especially relevant to remixers and sample-based producers: local Stem Separation in Suite and Splice browsing inside Live’s Browser. Ableton’s Live 12.3 announcement describes the release; the Live 12 release notes list later maintenance releases and 12.4 versions as well.
That distinction matters in 2026: 12.3 is the release that introduced these features, not the newest Live version. The features carry forward in later Live 12 builds, so use the current installer in your Ableton account unless you need a particular older build for compatibility.
What Stem Separation does
Stem Separation uses machine learning locally in Live to estimate four broad parts from a mixed audio file: Vocals, Drums, Bass, and Others. Others is a catch-all for material not assigned to the first three groups—such as synths, guitars, keyboards, and effects—not a clean stem for each instrument.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
It can be useful for making an instrumental or vocal-focused edit, practicing against a reduced backing track, building a mashup, extracting a phrase to chop, or rearranging material from a finished mix. Because it processes locally, the audio does not need to be uploaded to a web service for separation. The Live manual explains the feature and its limitations.
High Speed and High Quality
Live offers two modes. High Speed processes all stems in one pass and is useful for trying an idea quickly. High Quality uses dedicated separation passes for Vocals, Drums, and Bass; it generally takes longer and uses more processing. Neither mode guarantees clean isolation. Long files, dense mixes, and limited system resources can make the operation slow, and a shorter musical section is often more practical to process than an entire song.
Expect estimates, not original multitracks
The output is an estimate of components in a finished mix, not a reconstruction of the original recording session. Reverb, delay, chorus, and doubled vocals may spill between stems; hi-hats can appear in Others, while synthesized sounds may leak into Vocals. Distorted, live, or heavily processed audio can be especially difficult. Listen for watery transients, warbling, phase-like residue, or remnants of other instruments before using an extracted part in a final mix. Editing, EQ, gating, or spectral cleanup may help, but the result may work best as creative sample material rather than a supposedly pristine studio track.

How to separate stems in Live
From the Browser
- Open Live’s Browser and locate an audio file or sample.
- Right-click the file and choose Separate Stems to New Audio Tracks.
- Choose the stem categories you want and select High Speed or High Quality.
- Click Separate. Live creates the resulting audio parts on new tracks inside a Group Track.
From a clip in Session or Arrangement View
- Select an audio clip in Session View or Arrangement View.
- Right-click the clip and choose Separate Stems to New Audio Tracks.
- Choose the stem categories and quality mode, then start separation.
- Edit the new audio clips as you would other clips in Live.
Live mutes the source clip after separation so it does not play alongside the new stems. Effects from the source track are also added to the resulting Group Track. These behaviors and the command are documented in the Live 12 release notes.

Processing time varies with the source, its length, the chosen mode, available disk space, and the computer. Ableton’s documented behavior distinguishes Apple Silicon GPU acceleration from CPU processing on Intel Macs and Windows systems, while later releases include version-specific changes. Check the current Stem Separation FAQ and release notes for details applicable to your operating system and Live build rather than assuming one hardware rule applies everywhere.
- If separation is slow, try High Speed for a rough pass, process a shorter section, and close CPU-heavy applications.
- Check that you have enough disk space; Live can report an insufficient-space error when rendering stems.
- Update to a later Live 12 build if you are using an older installation and continue to have problems.
Which Live editions include the features?
Stem Separation is a Suite feature; Splice integration is available in all Live 12.3 editions. The key buying distinction is that Splice does not require Suite, but native Stem Separation does.

How Splice works inside Live
Splice is accessed through Live’s Browser, where you can browse and preview sounds without repeatedly switching to a separate browser window. You can audition sounds in sync with a Set and hear them in its key and tempo, then drag eligible samples into a project. The Live features page and Splice’s integration FAQ describe the in-DAW workflow.

Account, subscription, and internet access
You need a Splice account to sign in and use the integration. A free account lets you preview sounds and access available free samples; a paid plan opens broader catalog access and the Splice x Ableton Live plan. The in-DAW catalog integration requires an active internet connection. Splice’s desktop app may allow offline use of samples already synced locally, which is different from browsing the catalog offline inside Live. Check the license attached to each sample for permitted uses rather than assuming every sample has identical terms.

How to update and choose a version
- Check the installed Live version in the About or Help area; the exact menu wording varies by operating system and build.
- If you own Live 12 and the update has not appeared automatically, sign in to your Ableton account and download the current Live 12 installer.
- Install the latest available Live 12 build rather than seeking an obsolete 12.3 installer. Back up important Sets before a major update.
- Confirm your Live edition: Suite is required for Stem Separation.
- To use Splice, sign in from Live’s Browser and make sure the computer is online.
- Allow disk space for both downloaded samples and rendered stem files.

If you already own Suite
Updating within Live 12 makes sense if you want the features introduced in 12.3; existing Live 12 owners were not charged for that update. Stem Separation can be valuable for frequent remixing, mashups, sample extraction, or practice edits, provided you are comfortable with artifacts and local processing time.

If you own Standard, Intro, or Lite
Do not upgrade to Suite solely for Splice browsing: the integration is available in your existing edition. Consider Suite when built-in stem extraction is important enough to justify the upgrade, or when its broader instrument, effect, content, and Max for Live offering also suits your work. If you already have a stem tool and only separate tracks occasionally, staying on your edition may be more sensible.
If you are new to Live or mainly want samples
Try the free Splice account first if previews and free samples meet your needs. A paid plan may fit producers who rely on the larger catalog and in-DAW auditioning; it is less compelling if you already have a substantial sample library or avoid recurring subscriptions. New buyers should compare the cost and features of Suite with a lower Live edition plus a separate stem workflow, rather than treating Suite as necessary for Splice.
For a price reference, Ableton’s U.S. shop listed new-license prices of USD 749 for Suite, USD 349 for Standard, and USD 99 for Intro when checked on August 18, 2026. The shop displayed Suite rent-to-own at USD 31.21 per month, and Splice’s FAQ listed the Splice x Ableton plan at USD 12.99 per month. These are dated U.S. price observations, not guaranteed current quotes; region, taxes, upgrades, education offers, bundles, and promotions can change the amount. See the Ableton shop, its rent-to-own page, and Splice’s plan FAQ for current terms.
When a separate tool may fit better
- Moises is an app- or cloud-based option to consider if you do not own Suite and want to process audio separately from a Live Set. Ableton identifies Music AI, the technology provider behind Live’s Stem Separation, as the creator of Moises; that does not establish identical products or results.
- Serato Stems is a separate option aimed more at DJ performance and real-time stem manipulation than Live’s Browser and clip workflow.
- LALAL.AI is an online service to consider for occasional pre-processing without Live Suite. Online processing may involve uploads, account or credit requirements, and a separate workflow; check current terms and privacy details before sending audio.
These tools serve different workflows, and no direct quality comparison is established here. Choose based on whether local processing, real-time DJ control, or a separate online step matters most.
