It is an entertaining fit for viewers who enjoy horror-comedies at their most unruly; those seeking restrained suspense may find its gore and comic tone too much, and its opening takes time to reach the horror premise.
What is Abigail about?
Directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the filmmakers behind Ready or Not and Scream VI, Abigail begins with a kidnapping. A crew of criminals abducts Abigail, a 12-year-old ballerina, and expects to collect a $50 million ransom after guarding her for one night in an isolated mansion. The plan changes when they discover their captive is no ordinary girl.

That ransom is part of the film’s premise, not a statement about its budget or box office. Universal classifies the 2024 film as both Horror and Thriller; it runs 1 hour 50 minutes and is rated R for strong bloody violence and gore throughout, pervasive language, and brief drug use. The ensemble includes Alisha Weir, Melissa Barrera, Dan Stevens, Kathryn Newton, Will Catlett, Giancarlo Esposito, Kevin Durand and Angus Cloud. Universal Pictures’ film page lists the official credits, synopsis and rating.
What kind of horror movie is it?
The movie shifts from a criminal-crew setup into a confined-house vampire story, while keeping black comedy close at hand. Its blend is less about steadily tightening dread than about changing the rules of the situation and letting the ensemble react to escalating danger. The tonal swing is the point: a familiar ransom plot becomes an excuse for vampire action, macabre jokes and extravagant violence.

The Los Angeles Times places the film near Radio Silence’s earlier Ready or Not and notes echoes of vampire films including Near Dark, Blade and Dracula’s Daughter. These are tonal and genre touchstones, not shared story worlds. The comparison to Scream and Scream VI is likewise about the directors’ and Melissa Barrera’s franchise context, not continuity between the films.
Is Abigail scary?
It has the ingredients for horror—an isolated mansion, a group trapped with a dangerous captive, and a supernatural threat—but its comic energy often undercuts sustained suspense. TheWrap notes that the film takes time to reach its horror turn. Once it does, the danger is physical and emphatic, but viewers looking for a slow, steadily escalating scare may find the tone too playful.

Is Abigail funny?
Comedy is a major part of the film’s appeal, especially when the criminals’ different temperaments collide with the impossible situation they are in. The jokes sit alongside, rather than replace, the violence. Time Out describes it as “a vampire film that pirouettes over your funny bone,” while Associated Press critic Mark Kennedy called it “a gleeful genre-smashing romp through puddles of gore.” Kennedy awarded it three out of four stars.
How gory is Abigail?
Very. The R rating specifically cites strong bloody violence and gore throughout, and the film treats that excess as part of its comic spectacle rather than as a brief detour. Abigail’s ballet background shapes the movie’s visual identity, but her movement is paired with forceful vampire violence. The Los Angeles Times describes the gore as maximalist; Time Out calls the film a ballet-themed gorefest. If graphic bloodshed is a deal-breaker, this is not a restrained vampire film.

How does it compare with other horror-comedies?
Abigail is best understood as an energetic genre collision rather than a suspense-first horror film. Its opening spends time on the kidnapping setup before committing to the monster premise, then leans into comedy and gore. That makes it a closer tonal cousin to Ready or Not than to a straight vampire thriller, while its ballet motif gives the violence a distinctive performance-driven frame. The trade-off is clear: the film’s willingness to go broad and bloody supplies much of its fun, but can blunt tension for viewers who prefer restraint.
TheWrap also argues that the marketing revealed the central premise. For viewers who want the kidnapping-to-vampire turn to arrive as a surprise, trailers and promotional material may have already diminished that effect.
