How does he go undercover at Wheeler College?
Charles poses as an engineering professor. His cover puts him inside the college community, where he can investigate the people around Beringer. Wheeler is a liberal arts school and Emily’s alma mater, giving the case a personal connection as well as a new setting.
How does the new case differ from Season 1?
Season 1 sent Charles into San Francisco’s Pacific View retirement community to investigate missing jewelry. Netflix’s later explanation says an Alzheimer’s disease patient had taken the jewelry, meaning the apparent crime was not really a crime. Season 2 replaces that setting and case with a college and a blackmail investigation.

Why is Charles ready for another assignment?
By Season 2, Charles has been investigating for a year and has become more confident at it. Netflix describes him as eager for a substantial new challenge. The premise keeps him in the role of an outsider working undercover, but gives him a different institution and a more demanding mystery.
