The account below reflects Chatfield’s reported recollection; it is not a court or investigative finding.
What Abbie Chatfield said happened
In the interview, Chatfield described having consensual sex with one person at a party, then passing out in a bush after drinking. She said another man, whom she had kissed previously, had sex with her while she was unconscious. PerthNow quoted her describing the encounter: “And then this other guy had sex with me — who I’d kissed two weekends before, or something. That was rape.” (PerthNow, 1 November 2023)
Chatfield was 28 when the reports were published. So Dramatic! reported that she said she had never spoken about the incident before and felt sick bringing it up. (So Dramatic!, 1 November 2023)
How she said people around her responded
According to So Dramatic!, Chatfield recalled that friends initially framed her feelings as regret or embarrassment. She later told a male friend, who responded that what happened was not okay. These are recollections reported from the interview, not independently corroborated findings.

The shame and anxiety she described
PerthNow reported that Chatfield said she carried shame and anxiety for years and experienced a panic attack in her early 20s. She asked, “Why are we carrying around the guilt and the shame and the anxiety about it?” The feelings and words are attributed to Chatfield as reproduced by PerthNow.
Why she did not identify the man
The reports said Chatfield did not intend to name the man. PerthNow quoted her concern that speaking publicly could “potentially just ruin[] his life” and that “he probably has no idea how that affected me.” Neither report establishes the man’s identity or intent, and this article does not speculate about either.
