Contemporary coverage linked the ring and congratulatory comments to the engagement, but did not describe a proposal or report a direct announcement from the couple.
How the engagement report began
On 25 September 2023, 7NEWS reported that Channel 7 sports presenter Abbey Gelmi had posted five photos of her Brownlow Medal outfit. The final two showed a new ring on her left hand, prompting congratulatory comments from friends and followers. 7NEWS’s report framed the photos and reactions as an engagement reveal.
PerthNow likewise described Gelmi’s Instagram caption as “Brownlow with @7afl”. It quoted Tayla Broad commenting, “Also just waiting for everyone to notice the ring”, and quoted designer Oglia-Loro Couture congratulating Gelmi on the engagement. PerthNow noted that Gelmi and Lambert had not made an official announcement at that point. PerthNow’s report therefore supports a ring-based reveal, not a separately documented statement from the couple.
What the reports do—and do not—establish
- Reported: The photos showed a ring on Gelmi’s left hand, and people around her responded with congratulations.
- Not established in these reports: How or when Lambert proposed, the ring’s designer or details, or any wedding date or plans.
- Current marital status: The cited coverage does not establish whether the couple later married.
It is most accurate to say the engagement was reported after the Brownlow post, rather than to attribute a formal engagement announcement or proposal story to the couple.

Gelmi and Lambert’s family and career context
Gelmi and Lambert’s first child, Louis James Lambert, was born on 8 March 2023, according to Gelmi’s post quoted by 7NEWS: “Louis James Lambert came into the world 8.3.23 🌎🤍 Our hearts are so full.” In May 2024, 7NEWS reported her announcement, “Baby Lambert 2.0 coming ‘24”. The outlet later reported that their second child, Oliver Herb Lambert, arrived on 17 November 2024.
Lambert played 135 games for Richmond and was part of premiership teams in 2017, 2019 and 2020. He retired from playing in 2022 because of an ongoing hip issue and remained at the club as a conditioning coach, according to 7NEWS. The engagement report also noted that he finished third in Richmond’s best and fairest in 2017 and second in 2018.
