Its comedy gives the film buoyancy, but its most ambitious point—how caste discrimination is represented—also raises a specific and serious question about the distinctions its satire risks blurring.
A first crush against a changing country
Released in Marathi on October 6, 2023, Aatmapamphlet follows Ashish from childhood toward adolescence. His immediate concern is classmate Srushti, the object of a one-sided crush that feels enormous at his age. Around him, however, India is changing: the film places his private hopes amid political and social upheaval and growing intolerance. That contrast gives the story its shape, setting a child’s intimate world against pressures he cannot fully understand.
Director Ashish Avinash Bende and screenwriter Paresh Mokashi build the film around this gap between Ashish’s perspective and the larger forces surrounding him. The result is not a solemn account of social change. It uses the unruly scale of childhood feelings—especially romantic obsession—as a comic lens on divisions that are anything but small.
How the satire works
The film mixes schoolroom comedy, romantic fixation, social observation and self-aware narration. Mokashi’s narration is part of the joke rather than simply a device for explaining events. As The Times of India reviewer notes, it helps the story remain light-hearted while keeping its social subject in view. Scroll’s Nandini Ramnath likewise describes the voiceover and meta touches as central to the film’s comic approach, likening its tone to a contemporary fairy tale and comparing it to Jojo Rabbit. That is one critic’s analogy, not a claim of direct influence or a genre label.

Ramnath calls the film “one of the slyest, wickedest films about the stupidity of discrimination in recent times.” The praise reflects a real strength: Aatmapamphlet uses playfulness to make its social critique approachable without making the subject disappear. Its comic energy also creates a risk: when a film tries to make divisions look absurd, it must be careful not to imply that unequal positions are interchangeable.
Where the caste argument becomes difficult
That tension is the film’s most consequential weakness in Ramnath’s reading. While praising its willingness to use humor to address caste discrimination, she argues that “creating an equivalence between Dalits and upper castes comes off as specious.” This is a precise criticism, not a general objection to the film’s subject or comic form. Satire can expose prejudice, but an apparent symmetry between groups with unequal social positions can flatten the very inequality the satire aims to challenge.

The distinction matters when assessing the film’s ambition. Its willingness to bring caste into a buoyant coming-of-age comedy is part of what makes the approach notable; the question is whether particular moments preserve the difference between discrimination and the social power behind it. The film can be bold in choosing humor as its method and still be open to criticism for how that method frames caste.
Performances and pacing
Both reviews single out Om Bendkhale’s portrayal of Ashish, though they emphasize different stages of the character. Ramnath praises Bendkhale as the middle-stage Ashish, while The Times of India highlights his work as young Ashish. Ramnath also praises Chetan Wagh as Borya and credits Bende with steering the ensemble through tonal shifts. The Times of India similarly commends the supporting group. These are reviewer judgments, but together they point to the cast’s importance in keeping the film’s broad comedy connected to recognizable childhood feeling.

The Times of India’s reservation is about the ending: it finds the climax slightly hurried. That criticism qualifies the film’s momentum at the finish rather than negating the reviewers’ broader praise for its writing, direction and performances.
