Aata Vel Zaali Review: A Superficial Look at a Life-Altering Decision

Dilip Prabhavalkar and Rohini Hattangady ground Aata Vel Zaali, but the film’s restrained realism may not fully develop the elderly couple’s life-altering decision.

Aata Vel Zaali takes on a question with enormous emotional and ethical weight: why might an elderly couple want control over the circumstances of their deaths? Its two leads make the couple’s vulnerability tangible, but the film’s conversational realism does not always provide enough psychological development to make their decision feel fully examined. That tension—not a simple verdict on the right to die—is the heart of this drama.

What is Aata Vel Zaali about?

Directed by Ananth Narayan Mahadevan, this Marathi drama follows an elderly couple confronting a future they fear: becoming dependent, entering a vegetative state, or being left alone after the death of a spouse. Pune International Film Festival’s catalogue names them Shashidhar and Ranjana Lele; The Times of India review calls the wife Rajani. The film’s premise is that they seek active euthanasia and try to persuade a skeptical world. The catalogue describes the story as based on a true story, while TOI says it is inspired by real-life incidents; neither description makes the film a documentary record of a specific case.

The film’s promotional question, “Why can’t we die with dignity?”, frames its subject provocatively, but the drama is not a legal or medical guide. Its focus is the couple’s fears and the people around them, with darkly comic moments and an unexpected resolution, according to PIFF’s synopsis.

Does the film give the couple’s decision enough depth?

That is where the film’s central ambition and its main limitation meet. The fear of losing autonomy or surviving a partner is immediately legible; the harder task is dramatizing how those fears become a settled choice. Scroll’s review headline calls the film “a superficial look at a life-altering decision,” and its indexed excerpt argues that the film does not adequately convey the protagonists’ mindset. The available excerpt supports that broad criticism, but not a scene-by-scene account of how the film falls short.

The concern is not that a film must offer a definitive answer to an ethical question. It is that a premise this consequential needs enough characterization and dramatic movement for viewers to understand how these particular people arrive at it. A realistic tone can make the couple feel familiar, yet familiarity alone is not the same as psychological insight. If their position remains more clearly stated than developed, the subject can feel larger than the drama built to contain it.

What works: the performances and realist tone

Dilip Prabhavalkar and Rohini Hattangady anchor the film as Shashidhar and his wife. TOI reviewer Kalpeshraj Kubal praised the leads and the straightforward, realistic treatment, while Maharashtra Times reviewer Kubal also highlighted the performances and the film’s realistic atmosphere. The Maharashtra Times review particularly praised Hattangady’s expressive quietness—a useful counterweight to a story whose subject could easily invite overstatement.

The performance-led approach helps make the couple’s predicament emotionally accessible. TOI’s Kubal wrote, “Aata Vel Zaali makes you think hard though, not just on the topic it addresses, but also on the life of elderly people in general.” That response points to a strength beyond the film’s central debate: attention to the routines, vulnerability and relationships of older people.

Where the drama loses momentum

The same plainspoken approach can become static. Both Kubal reviews rated the film 3/5, but their reservations sharpen the question of dramatic shape. TOI’s review says the realistic approach can feel tedious and warns that the film is not aimed at viewers looking for mass entertainment. In Maharashtra Times, Kubal says the dialogue-heavy construction slows the film, finds no firm plot or screenplay, and reads Shashidhar as potentially eccentric. Those are critical judgments, not settled facts about the film.

There is a meaningful trade-off here: a film that resists melodrama may preserve the texture of everyday conversation, but it still needs progression. When exchanges repeat a position without deepening it or changing the relationships around it, realism risks becoming an excuse for underdevelopment. The available reviews disagree less about the film’s sincerity than about whether its restraint creates emotional complexity or simply slows the story.

How to approach it as a viewer

Aata Vel Zaali is best approached as a performance-centered drama and a prompt for reflection, rather than as a tightly plotted thriller or a comprehensive examination of end-of-life ethics. Viewers drawn to restrained acting and social subjects may find value in its attention to aging and spousal dependence. Those expecting the couple’s inner lives to be closely unpacked may share Scroll’s concern that the decision receives less dramatic scrutiny than it deserves.

The film’s catalogue and release details also differ by source. PIFF lists the title as a 2021 Marathi film with a 90-minute runtime; TOI lists a theatrical release date of 23 February 2024 and a runtime of 1 hour 32 minutes. These are different catalogue and release dates, not necessarily a contradiction. The film’s key credits include screenplay by Mahadevan and Mahendra Patil, cinematography by Pradeep Khanvilkar, editing by Kush Tripathy and Mahadevan, sound design by Bhagat Singh Rathore, and music by Sanjoy Chowdhary.
