Maagh, also titled The Winter Within, follows Nargis, a Kashmiri shawl weaver searching for her husband after he disappears during a security sweep. Directed by Aamir Bashir, the 2022 drama uses winter not just as a setting but as a force shaping the characters’ daily lives and the film’s point of view.
What is Maagh about?
Nargis, played by Zoya Hussain, is a skilled shawl weaver whose husband, Manzoor, has gone missing after being picked up in a security sweep. As she searches for him, the film follows her precarious position within her community and the uncertainty of a life suspended between waiting and action.

The story also sets two images of Kashmir against each other: the snow-covered landscape presented to visitors and the lived experience of local people. That contrast is part of the film’s perspective; it should not be mistaken for an independent account of every aspect of present-day conditions in Kashmir.
How does winter shape the film?
Bashir has described the film’s deliberately unhurried pace as an expression of winter’s long nights and physical and spiritual demands. “Time slows down, and the nights are way longer,” he told Scroll.in in December 2022. He also said, “Slowing things down is part of the watching experience.” Long takes and close-ups ask the viewer to stay with faces, gestures and textures rather than rush through the search for answers.

The cold palette is interrupted by Nargis’s shawl. Bashir explained that she weaves her life and past into it, while the present is marked by winter’s colours. The title Maagh refers to winter. In a 2025 interview with Kashmir Times, Bashir framed winter as a metaphor for occupation and state oppression. That is the filmmaker’s stated symbolism, not a universal definition of the film’s meaning.
Who made the film, and how was it developed?
Bashir directed Maagh and co-wrote it with Shanker Raman, who also served as cinematographer. Bashir told Scroll he began developing the idea in 2012, envisioning a winter-themed follow-up to his 2010 film Harud (Autumn). He said the vision endured while details changed as Kashmir’s political circumstances changed.
The film was shot across two winters, in 2019 and 2020, according to Scroll. The report says Hussain’s script was translated into Bakarwali before she was asked to speak Kashmiri for the role. Shabir Ahmad Lone, who plays Nargis’s employer, runs shawl-weaving workshops for women, the report adds.
Cast, language and runtime
The Sydney Film Festival programme lists The Winter Within / Maagh as a 99-minute India-France-Qatar production from 2022, in Kashmiri and Urdu with English subtitles. Its catalogue credits Claire Jajmouard as producer and lists Zoya Hussain, Shabir Ahmad Lone and Manzoor Ahmad Bhat among the cast. Ahmad Bhat plays Manzoor, according to Scroll.
Where has Maagh screened?
The film premiered at the Busan International Film Festival in October 2022. Scroll reported that it received an audience choice award there. It was then shown at the International Film Festival of Kerala, scheduled for December 9–16, 2022.
In May 2024, The New Indian Express reported that the film was screening in Bengaluru and quoted Bashir saying its sensitive content made it difficult to find takers. These are past festival and theatrical screenings, not a current schedule.
Where can you watch Maagh now?
Current streaming, rental, purchase and physical-media availability is not established by the available sources. The reported screenings in Busan, Kerala and Bengaluru do not confirm that the film is currently available to watch in any particular country or on any particular service. Check a licensed service or the film’s distributor for up-to-date local availability.
Is Maagh based on a true story?
The available sources describe the film’s premise and Bashir’s evolving creative idea, but do not establish it as a direct adaptation of a specific true case. Its portrayal of Nargis and Manzoor should therefore be understood as the film’s story and perspective, rather than identified as a documented individual case.
How does it relate to Harud?
Bashir described Maagh as a winter-themed follow-up to Harud (Autumn), a 2010 film. The seasonal framing connects the two works, but the available sources do not establish that a planned third instalment has been completed.
