A Widow’s Game is inspired by the 2017 Patraix murder case in Valencia, Spain. The real Maje—María Jesús Moreno Cantó—was last reported by TIME in May 2025 to be serving her sentence at Fontcalent prison in Alicante province. That report does not verify where she is or her custody status as of October 8, 2026.
Where is the real Maje now?
The latest sourced report on Maje’s location is from TIME, dated May 30, 2025. It said Moreno had given birth in July 2023 while under police custody at Alicante General Hospital and was then transferred to Fontcalent prison’s mother-child unit. This is a historical report, not confirmation of her whereabouts in October 2026. The available reporting does not establish her current location or custody status.
Who was the real Maje?
Maje is María Jesús Moreno Cantó, the woman at the center of the Patraix case. The victim was her husband, Antonio Navarro Cerdán, and Salvador Rodrigo Lapiedra was also convicted. Netflix’s official true-story explainer identifies the real people behind the film.
What happened in the Patraix murder case?
The killing
On August 16, 2017, Antonio Navarro, a 36-year-old industrial engineer, was attacked in the garage of his apartment building in Valencia as he left for work. He died at the scene, according to TIME’s May 30, 2025 account of the case. Netflix’s film synopsis says its fictionalized victim was stabbed seven times; that detail belongs to the film’s official synopsis, not a separate court finding.

Arrests and verdict
TIME reported that Maje and Salvador were arrested in January 2018. In October 2020, the court sentenced Maje to 22 years in prison and Salvador to 17 years; TIME reported that Salvador’s sentence was reduced for cooperating. It also reported an order for €250,000 in damages to Antonio’s family. These are figures as reported by TIME, not an independently reviewed copy of the judgment.
According to TIME, the court considered messages, calls and witness testimony in finding the crime had been jointly planned. The article also recounts Salvador changing his account and implicating both defendants. At the end of its film coverage, TIME quoted a real hearing recording: “In my previous statement, I said it was all my idea. But it was both of us,” Salvador said. The quote is attributed to that recording by TIME; it should not be treated as a full or independently verified court transcript.

How does A Widow’s Game differ from the real case?
A Widow’s Game is a dramatized retelling, not a court record. Netflix’s official synopsis changes names: Antonio becomes Arturo Ferrer Puig, Maje remains Maje, and Salvador is called Salva. Netflix’s explainer maps the story back to the real people and case. A character name or scene in the film should not be assumed to reproduce a documented fact.
The movie stars Ivana Baquero as Maje, Tristán Ulloa as Salva and Carmen Machi as Inspector Eva; Carlos Sedes directed it, according to Netflix’s production information. Netflix announced a global premiere on May 30, 2025. The Netflix title page lists the film, but availability and audio options can vary by territory.
