A Widow’s Game (La viuda negra) is a Spanish-language Netflix thriller inspired by the 2017 Patraix case in Valencia. Netflix released it globally on May 30, 2025; its title page lists the film for streaming and offline downloads. Ivana Baquero, Carmen Machi and Tristán Ulloa star.
What is A Widow’s Game about?
Netflix’s synopsis begins in August 2017, when a man is found stabbed in a Valencia parking lot. The investigation by the city’s homicide group turns toward his young widow, María Jesús “Maje” Moreno. Netflix identifies the story as inspired by the Patraix case and names Moreno, her husband Antonio Navarro, and Salvador Rodrigo.
The film is a dramatization, not a documentary or a verified account of every scene and conversation. Its depiction of the people involved, their motives and the investigation should be understood as the filmmakers’ interpretation of a real case. Netflix Tudum’s film announcement and official title page describe the connection.
Who is in the cast?
- Ivana Baquero plays María Jesús “Maje” Moreno.
- Carmen Machi plays investigator Eva.
- Tristán Ulloa plays Salva.
Netflix lists Carlos Sedes as director and Bambú Producciones as producer, with Ramón Campos as executive producer. The film’s presentation reflects a creative approach to the case, rather than independent confirmation of what real participants thought or intended.

Executive producer Ramón Campos described the creative question behind the film this way: “Why does a person consider that it is better to commit a murder than to get divorced?” Netflix also quoted him saying, “Because this film is not about the victim. It is about the murderers.” These are Campos’s statements about the filmmakers’ perspective, not established findings about the real case. Netflix’s announcement includes both quotes.
