In a reported 1980 phone interview, Stanley Kubrick described Dave Bowman’s transformation at the end of 2001: A Space Odyssey: formless, god-like intelligences take him to a human-like room, observe him there, and ultimately turn him into a “super-being” before sending him back to Earth. Kubrick leaves what happens after Dave’s return for viewers to imagine.

What Kubrick said happens to Dave

The interview account gives the ending a narrative shape without explaining every image or settling every symbolic interpretation. Kubrick’s stated conception is that advanced intelligences encounter Dave, study him, and change him.

The beings take Dave and observe him

Kubrick described Dave as taken by “god-like entities, creatures of pure energy and intelligence with no shape or form.” They place him in a room designed to feel familiar to a human, though it is only an approximation of a human environment. In Kubrick’s explanation, the room functions like a “human zoo”: the beings can observe Dave while attempting to give him surroundings he can understand.

Time and Dave’s life unfold differently in the room

Dave no longer experiences time in an ordinary way. Kubrick’s account says he sees his life passing in that room, with the implication that the beings are studying him through a setting and sequence he can perceive even though he cannot understand their nature.

Dave returns transformed

The intelligences eventually transform Dave into a super-being and send him back to Earth. Kubrick did not specify exactly what that return means for humanity or what Dave does next. As the closing thought reproduced by The Forward puts it: “And we have to only guess what happens when he goes back.”

How the interview came to light

Open Culture and The Forward reported the explanation in July 2018, reproducing material from a phone conversation between Kubrick and Japanese journalist Junichi Yaoi. Open Culture dates the footage to 1980 and says it was gathered for a Japanese documentary that was never released. These are journalistic reports reproducing the interview, rather than an independently verified archival transcript.

Open Culture also relays filmmaker Lee Unkrich’s account, attributed to a Warner Bros. publicist, that Kubrick was in another office at the studio during the phone conversation. That is a reported anecdote, not an archival production record. The clip is best understood as a rare account of Kubrick’s intended plot explanation, not a comprehensive commentary on the film.

What the explanation does—and does not—settle

Kubrick’s account clarifies the literal sequence he had in mind: Dave is taken, observed in a human-like environment, transformed, and returned to Earth. It does not make every element of the ending unambiguous, nor does it establish that viewers must reject other symbolic readings. The film’s press material, hosted by the Festival de Cannes, frames 2001: A Space Odyssey around humanity’s first contact with life elsewhere in the universe and presents that life as potentially biological, mechanical, or disembodied and energetic. That context is consistent with the interview’s formless intelligences, but it does not turn Kubrick’s explanation into a definitive key to every image.

One archival distinction matters: the Stanley Kubrick Archive at the University of the Arts London catalogs a transcript of a taped interview with Kubrick by The New York Times’ William Kloman, conducted in New York on 4 April 1968. That is a separate interview, not the 1980 Yaoi phone conversation, and the catalog record alone does not establish what the 1968 transcript says.
