Rebecca Zlotowski’s A Private Life is less a straight-ahead detective thriller than a comic, psychologically minded noir built around Jodie Foster’s performance as a psychiatrist who cannot leave a patient’s death alone. Its mystery keeps changing shape as the film turns its attention from the case to the investigator herself. That makes it an intriguing fit for viewers open to tonal detours, but a less natural choice for anyone seeking the tightly wound suspense of a conventional thriller.
What is A Private Life about?
In Vie privée, released internationally as A Private Life, renowned psychiatrist Lilian Steiner is troubled when she learns that one of her patients has died. Convinced the death was murder, she sets out to investigate. The premise gives the film a detective-story engine, but Lilian’s professional habits and personal blind spots make her own mind part of the mystery.

Rebecca Zlotowski directed and co-wrote the 2025 French feature with Anne Berest and Gaëlle Macé. Foster plays Lilian; the cast also includes Daniel Auteuil, Virginie Efira, Mathieu Amalric, Vincent Lacoste and Luàna Bajrami. The 105-minute film was presented out of competition at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. Cannes’ film listing provides the production credits and runtime.
Is it a conventional murder thriller?
Not quite. The case matters, but the film is not organized solely around gathering clues and delivering a clean solution. It also studies Lilian: how she interprets other people, where her confidence comes from, and how difficult it is for her to keep her own private life separate from her work. If you come expecting a propulsive investigation in the vein of Prisoners, the shifts in emphasis may feel like a detour. If you enjoy mysteries that use a case to reveal the detective, the change of focus is part of the appeal.
#1 Best Overall
- Jason Statham stars in "The Beekeeper," a heart-pounding action-thriller about a mysterious Beekeeper.
- Adam Clay (Statham), a former operative of a powerful organization known as Beekeepers, upends his covert life and embarks on a brutal revenge mission to dismantle corruption at the highest levels of our society.
- The stellar cast also includes Emmy Raver-Lampman, Josh Hutcherson, Bobby Naderi, Minnie Driver, Phylicia Rashad and Jeremy Iron, amongst others.
The film’s official promotional description calls it “a frisky, feminine, film noir about psychoanalysis and many other things.” That framing is more helpful than a simple thriller label: noir atmosphere and a murder investigation sit alongside a comic, character-led portrait. Cannes similarly highlighted the film’s duality between deliberate comedy and explorations of a personality with gray areas. The festival’s conversation with Zlotowski and Foster underscores that tonal mixture.
Does Jodie Foster hold the film together?
Foster is the film’s anchor because Lilian must remain compelling as the story moves between investigation, comedy and psychological self-scrutiny. Her performance gives the character a clear center even when the film’s priorities are less predictable. The role also has an unusual language dimension: Foster performs in French, as noted by Film at Lincoln Center’s program page.

At Cannes, Foster described the close attention she and the filmmakers gave the dialogue: “We reviewed the whole film, word for word, for six or seven hours straight.” She was speaking about the film-review process, not describing a general acting method. The Cannes article supplies that context.
Where the mystery can frustrate
The film’s turns and tonal changes do not always feel like they are serving the same purpose. At its best, uncertainty about the case echoes uncertainty about Lilian: the complications keep the viewer alert to how much she knows, assumes or wants to believe. At other points, the shifting balance between investigation and character study can make the mystery feel less like a steadily tightening puzzle than a route into other material.

- Runtime: 145 minutes
That distinction matters if “convoluted” is your concern. Complexity can deepen a noir mystery when each turn changes how you understand its people; it can also make the central question feel secondary. A Private Life leans toward the former in its ambitions, but its playful approach will not satisfy every viewer looking for a firm thriller rhythm. The uncertainty is part of the film’s design, not a guarantee that every plot turn will land.
Who is likely to enjoy it?
- Try it if: you like character-led mysteries, comic noir, and stories that let an investigator’s personality complicate the case.
- Adjust expectations if: you want a brisk procedural, a consistently suspenseful atmosphere, or a mystery whose clues and resolution dominate every scene.
- Consider it for Foster: her portrayal is the film’s strongest point of continuity across its shifts in tone.
Release dates and runtime
The release dates differ by territory. French distributor Ad Vitam lists November 26, 2025, for France, while Sony Pictures Classics announced January 16, 2026, for the US. Those are separate market dates, not one worldwide premiere date. The film’s Cannes listing gives its runtime as 105 minutes.
