What is alopecia areata?
Alopecia areata is an autoimmune condition: the immune system mistakenly attacks hair follicles. It often causes smooth, round or oval patches of hair loss, though it can affect other body areas and may be more extensive. It is not contagious. NIAMS explains alopecia areata.
What causes hair loss in kids?
Alopecia areata is not the only explanation. Hair loss in children can also be associated with tight hairstyles that pull on hair, telogen effluvium, hair pulling, or fungal infection. The possible cause depends partly on a child’s age and how the loss appears; a photograph or one symptom is not enough to determine the cause. What might happen next?
The course of alopecia areata varies. Hair may regrow, hair loss may return, and some people do not regain all the hair they expected. NIAMS says there is no cure, although treatment can help hair regrow more quickly. These possibilities are not a prediction for any particular child. NIAMS overview.
How are care decisions made?
A pediatrician can assess a child’s hair loss and consider possible causes. If alopecia areata is diagnosed, a dermatologist can discuss care suited to the child. Treatment is individualized and is not always recommended; according to the American Academy of Dermatology, some children with a small number of recent patches may regrow hair without treatment. Families should make decisions with a clinician rather than trying to diagnose or treat a child from a story or an online image. The AAD describes alopecia areata diagnosis and treatment.

Talking with a child about hair loss
Hair loss can feel conspicuous or upsetting, but a child’s worth and identity do not depend on having hair. The National Alopecia Areata Foundation’s parent guide encourages caregivers to affirm that hair—or its absence—does not define a child or a parent. Author Sam Rickaby, whose son inspired Monty’s Mane, told Alopecia UK that the message for children is “That they are not alone and that alopecia doesn’t change who they are as a person.” Read Alopecia UK’s interview with Rickaby.
