The widely reported $301 million worldwide figure for A Minecraft Movie was an early estimate tied to its first two days—not the final three-day opening-weekend total. The Associated Press reported studio estimates of $157 million in the U.S. and Canada and $144 million internationally; the later reported three-day worldwide weekend total was $313.7 million.
What did the $301 million figure measure?
GamesBeat’s updated report on April 6, 2025, put the film at $301 million worldwide after its second day. The Associated Press described its underlying figures as studio estimates issued Sunday: $157 million from U.S. and Canadian theaters and $144 million internationally. Those regional estimates add up to the early worldwide figure, but they describe an early reporting window rather than the complete three-day weekend.

The distinction matters when comparing box-office headlines: the $301 million figure was an early global estimate associated with the first two days, while the later reported weekend total covers three days.
How much did A Minecraft Movie make over the full opening weekend?
Guinness World Records reported a three-day worldwide opening weekend of $313.7 million, citing The Numbers. The Numbers lists the domestic opening weekend at $162,753,003; Guinness rounds the domestic figure to $162.75 million. These are the later reported three-day totals, not a revision of the early estimate’s reporting window.

Why the two headlines are not contradictory
They use different reporting windows and bases. The $301 million headline reflects an early Sunday estimate after the second day; $313.7 million is the later reported total for the full three-day weekend. A comparison with another film’s three-day opening should use the three-day figure, not the earlier $301 million estimate.
The AP report also compared the film’s opening with the $146 million opening for The Super Mario Bros. Movie, describing it as the prior record for a video-game adaptation. That is AP’s comparison and figure; the $301 million early estimate should not be set against a three-day opening without accounting for the different windows.

When and where did the movie open?
The official movie site says the North American theatrical and IMAX release was April 4, 2025, and international release began April 2. The live-action adaptation was directed by Jared Hess and starred Jason Momoa and Jack Black, with Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Hansen, and Jennifer Coolidge. Warner Bros. distributed worldwide, while Legendary East distributed in China.
In its April 6, 2025 report, the AP described the film as rated PG and reported that Warner Bros. had opened it in 4,263 domestic locations and on 36,000 international screens. Those are figures from the contemporaneous opening report, not a statement of current theatrical availability.

Where can viewers find the movie now?
The official movie site lists the film as available to stream and identifies 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD formats. The Numbers records May 13, 2025, as the Warner Home Video release date. The site does not establish the current streaming service, territory-specific availability, or current retail stock, so check the relevant service or retailer for those details.
What does the opening say about its audience?
Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group co-chair and CEO Pamela Abdy told the AP, “We’re just thrilled that audiences are responding and that everyone’s going to the theater.” Her co-chair and CEO Michael DeLuca said, “You can’t underestimate the value of earnest, entertaining, joyous cinema.” Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian observed, “Younger audiences love going to the movie theater, believe it or not.” These comments offer the studio’s and analyst’s perspectives; the box-office totals themselves establish the scale of the opening, not the reasons audiences chose to attend.
