When does the Minecraft Movie sequel come out?
A Minecraft Movie Squared is scheduled for a U.S. theatrical release on July 23, 2027. The date was specified in the May 2026 update; the Associated Press had earlier reported Warner Bros.’ plan for a July 2027 release. It remains a scheduled date and could change. Mojang’s May 30, 2026 article uses the sequel’s title, while the Associated Press reported the initial 2027 plan on October 9, 2025.
What is the sequel called?
The announced title is A Minecraft Movie Squared. Mojang used that title in its May 30, 2026 build-challenge announcement, following the title update reported after Minecraft Live at TwitchCon Rotterdam. Earlier articles that described the sequel as untitled predate this announcement. Mojang’s official announcement and Nintendo Life’s May 31, 2026 report identify it as A Minecraft Movie Squared.
Who is making the film, and who is in the cast?
Director and writers
Jared Hess is returning to direct and co-write the sequel. Later reporting also names Chris Galletta as a screenplay co-writer. Nintendo Life’s May 2026 update reports the writing and directing details; the Associated Press’s October 2025 announcement also identified Hess’s return and named Jason Momoa among the sequel’s producers.

Cast updates

These announcements do not amount to a complete cast list, so they do not establish whether other performers from the first film will return. Nintendo Life’s May 31, 2026 report covers the cast update.
Production status
The May 2026 report said the cast and production were back on set. It did not establish a filming location or a wrap date. Nintendo Life reported that production update.

What is the plot?
No sequel plot synopsis appears in Mojang’s official challenge announcement or the May 2026 news update. That means the story, including how Alex fits into it, has not been established in those announcements. Fan theories and purported leaks should not be treated as confirmed plot details. Mojang’s challenge article and Nintendo Life’s update provide the available announcement details.
Can you still enter the Minecraft Movie Build Challenge?
No. Mojang’s official challenge offered players a chance to have a build considered for appearance in A Minecraft Movie Squared or its end credits, but its entry and voting dates have passed. The submission window ran May 30 through June 8, 2026, and community voting was scheduled for July 2–5, 2026. The winning build was not guaranteed to appear: Warner Bros. would determine placement. Mojang’s May 30, 2026 challenge rules provide the deadlines and placement terms.

- Entrants had to be at least 16 and have Minecraft: Bedrock Edition and a Microsoft account.
- Each entrant could submit one entry, consisting of a video and screenshot.
- The build had to fit within a 16Ă—16Ă—32-block space and represent plains, taiga, badlands or frozen ocean.
The contest was a fan activity, not a requirement for watching the sequel. For background, Mojang describes the first film as drawing on the Minecraft world in its September 3, 2024 first-look article.
