Yes. A Minecraft Movie opened to a later-reported $162,753,003 in the U.S. and Canada over April 4–6, 2025, surpassing The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s previous domestic opening-weekend record for a video-game adaptation. That is a domestic opening comparison—not a claim that Minecraft surpassed Mario’s worldwide lifetime gross.

The figure differs from the Sunday studio estimate reported by the Associated Press on April 6: $157 million domestically and $301 million worldwide. Box-office totals can change as estimates are replaced by reported figures, so the two numbers describe different reporting stages rather than competing versions of the same final tally. The Associated Press report gives the contemporaneous estimate.
Did A Minecraft Movie beat Mario?
It beat Mario’s former record for a video-game adaptation’s domestic opening weekend. The Associated Press reported that The Super Mario Bros. Movie had opened to $146 million domestically; compared with that figure, Minecraft’s later-reported $162,753,003 opening is higher. AP’s April 6, 2025 coverage supplies the Mario comparison, while Box Office Mojo lists Minecraft’s later opening figure.

The comparison is specifically about the U.S. and Canada opening weekend. It should not be confused with worldwide opening weekend or worldwide lifetime gross:
| Measure | A Minecraft Movie | The Super Mario Bros. Movie |
|---|---|---|
| Domestic opening weekend | $162,753,003, later-listed figure for April 4–6, 2025 (Box Office Mojo, accessed October 7, 2026). | Approximately $146 million, as reported by AP in 2025. |
| Worldwide opening weekend | $313.7 million, Guinness World Records’ figure for the opening weekend dated April 6, 2025; its record entry gives $162.75 million domestic and says the global sum was verified by The Numbers. | Not stated in the cited sources. |
| Worldwide lifetime gross | $960,387,780, cumulative total listed by Box Office Mojo, accessed October 7, 2026. | $1,359,146,628 as of February 19, 2025, according to Guinness World Records; this is a dated historical total. |

What the opening record does—and does not—show
The record establishes an unusually large launch for a video-game adaptation in the domestic market. It does not by itself establish that the film was profitable. AP reported a production cost of $150 million, excluding marketing and promotion; that production figure alone cannot show a break-even point or profit because it does not account for the full costs and revenue arrangements.
The movie is a PG-rated co-production of Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros., directed by Jared Hess and starring Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, and Sebastian Eugene Hansen. AP describes its premise as characters entering Minecraft’s Overworld for an adventure, adapting the best-selling video game. The film’s broad family appeal was reflected in AP’s April 6 report: audiences were about 62% men and 64% under age 25, with a B+ CinemaScore and 4/5 stars in PostTrak exit polls. These are audience and exit-poll snapshots from that opening weekend, not enduring measures of all viewers.
Rank #3
For industry context, AP said the domestic box office had been 13% behind the prior year before the weekend and that the gap narrowed to 5% afterward. TechCrunch’s April 5 preview, using a different point in the weekend, described Comscore’s year-over-year estimate as down 7%. Those are dated snapshots taken at different moments, not a single consistent measure. TechCrunch’s April 5 preview also reported an early $58 million Friday and a projected $135 million opening; that projection preceded the weekend’s final reporting and is not the final total.

“Beating Mario” is accurate when it means the domestic opening-weekend record. It is misleading if read as a claim about worldwide lifetime earnings: Guinness put Mario’s worldwide gross at $1,359,146,628 as of February 19, 2025, while Box Office Mojo later listed Minecraft’s cumulative worldwide gross at $960,387,780. Those totals have different dates and come from different sources, and neither changes what the domestic opening comparison measures.
