What is A Man on the Inside about?
Netflix’s eight-episode first season follows Charles Nieuwendyk, a retired widower in San Francisco who answers a private investigator’s advertisement. He goes undercover at Pacific View, a fictional retirement residence, to find a missing family heirloom. The case gives Charles a reason to venture into unfamiliar territory—and brings him into the lives of the people around him.

The series is inspired by the Oscar-nominated documentary The Mole Agent. It is a scripted comedy built from that premise, not a documentary remake. Netflix lists the series as streaming on its service; availability can vary by country. Netflix’s series guide has the season-one premise and cast details.
Why it feels like a return to The Good Place
The connection is both creative and personal to the cast. Mike Schur created The Good Place and A Man on the Inside, while Danson starred in the former and leads the latter. Viewers may recognize Stephanie Beatriz from The Good Place and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, another Schur-created comedy. TIME’s interview with Danson and Beatriz captures that casting link.

What carries over is less a formula than an interest in people trying to become better connected to one another. The new series is gentler and more grounded: Charles’s later-life reinvention, grief, family ties and unexpected friendships are as important as the investigation. It does not continue The Good Place’s story, and Charles is not Michael; the appeal is the shared humanist comic outlook and Danson’s ability to make a character’s uncertainty feel warm rather than sentimental.
Danson has described aging and family as part of the show’s emotional territory in a Netflix interview. Schur’s concise explanation of the subject was: “We just don’t talk about this stuff.”

How season 2 changes the investigation
Season 2 moves Charles from a retirement residence to Wheeler College. He investigates an attempt to interfere with a major donation, expanding the case beyond the intimate setting of the first season. That shift gives the series a new environment while keeping Charles’s undercover work as a way to meet people and find a role in a community.

Netflix reported that the two seasons had drawn more than 45 million views through the end of 2025 and that the show spent five weeks in its Global Top 10. Those are Netflix’s reported figures, not independent audience measurements. The company’s season 3 update also identifies the next chapter as the final one.

Does the show earn the comparison?
For viewers looking for Schur’s warmth, Danson’s buoyant presence and comedy rooted in relationships, the comparison is useful. The series has a distinct pleasure in watching Charles find confidence and connection in a stage of life that television often treats as an epilogue. Its mystery supplies momentum, but the human interactions are the stronger draw.
The trade-off is that the investigations can feel lower-key than the character premise suggests. In her November 20, 2025 review of season 2, The Guardian’s Rachel Aroesti called the show overly inoffensive and argued that it trades on the earlier success of Schur and Danson. She also recognized the heart in Charles’s search for friendship after his wife’s death. That is one critic’s assessment, but it points to a fair expectation: this is a comfortable, humane comedy more than a twist-driven mystery.

What’s next for the series?
Netflix said filming had begun in San Francisco on season 3, which it calls the final season. As of the September 25, 2026 update, the service had not announced a release date. Danson’s performance has earned Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild nominations, according to Netflix’s series guide; they are nominations, not wins.
