His releases range from 1960s pop covers to comedy and lounge singing as his My Cousin Vinny character, then jazz collaborations and a 2019 traditional-pop and jazz project. The chronology makes clear why the comic persona is memorable—and why it can overshadow the rest.
Pesci was playing music before his film career took off
In the early 1960s, Pesci played guitar in New Jersey groups, including Joey Dee and the Starliters. Esquire recounts that he introduced Bob Gaudio to Frankie Valli and Tommy DeVito, an anecdote connected to the group that became the Four Seasons. It is a reported account of Pesci’s place in that scene, not evidence that he founded or managed the group.
That musical background preceded Pesci’s major screen roles. His first album, Little Joe Sure Can Sing, appeared in 1968 under the name Joe Ritchie. It was built around covers of contemporary pop songs rather than the jazz associated with his later recordings. Esquire identifies Beatles songs “The Fool on the Hill” and “Fixing a Hole,” along with the Bee Gees’ “To Love Somebody.”
His recordings, from Joe Ritchie to Pesci
| Year | Billing and release | Style and context |
|---|---|---|
| 1968 | Joe Ritchie, Little Joe Sure Can Sing | Contemporary pop covers, including Beatles and Bee Gees songs. Esquire and the album listing. |
| 1998 | Vincent LaGuardia Gambini, Vincent LaGuardia Gambini Sings Just for You | Comedy blended with lounge and big-band singing, plus the rap number “Wise Guy.” Esquire and a contemporaneous CMJ item. |
| 2003 | Joe Doggs with Joey DeFrancesco, Falling in Love Again | A jazz recording with organist Joey DeFrancesco. Esquire characterizes Pesci’s vocal approach as restrained. |
| 2019 | Joe Pesci, Pesci… Still Singing | A jazz-oriented and traditional-pop project. KCRW reports Adam Levine and Arturo Sandoval appear on “Baby Girl.” |
The Gambini album is the famous detour, not the whole story
The 1998 album borrowed the name of Pesci’s lawyer character in My Cousin Vinny, making the link between actor and singer impossible to miss. Its comic framing and “Wise Guy” rap single can make it look like a one-off novelty record. But contemporary trade coverage described a comedy-musical release that also included a Christmas song, while later accounts describe a blend of humor, lounge singing and big-band material.

The persona draws attention because it turns a familiar movie character into the album’s billing identity. It can also obscure Pesci’s other musical modes: the early pop-cover record, the jazz collaboration credited to Joe Doggs, and the later album released as Joe Pesci.
Pesci recorded jazz beyond the comic character
In 2003, Pesci recorded Falling in Love Again with jazz organist Joey DeFrancesco, using the name Joe Doggs. That billing and collaboration mark a clear shift from the Gambini album’s comedy framing. Esquire describes the release as a jazz record and praises Pesci’s restrained singing; that assessment belongs to the magazine’s review, rather than representing a broader critical consensus.

Pesci returned to recording under his own name with Pesci… Still Singing in 2019, around the renewed attention to his acting in The Irishman. KCRW’s contemporary coverage notes that Adam Levine and trumpeter Arturo Sandoval appear on “Baby Girl.” It also reports that Pesci recorded a holiday song with longtime collaborator Frank Vincent.

Pesci’s recordings do not form a single, continuous genre project. Their changing names and styles are part of the story: Joe Ritchie sang pop covers; Vincent LaGuardia Gambini made the comic, character-based album; Joe Doggs recorded with DeFrancesco; and the 2019 collection returned to Pesci’s own name. Esquire also reports that singer Jimmy Scott was an early influence. Pesci recalled, “He’d listen to me and encourage me,” and the magazine says Pesci took “Little” in “Little Joe” from Scott.
