Whoopi Goldberg’s documented real-estate history covers five distinctive properties in California, Vermont, New York, and New Jersey. They include an early Berkeley Victorian, a historic Pacific Palisades mansion, a 745-acre Vermont estate, a full-floor SoHo loft, and the Colonial-style West Orange estate that recent reporting identifies as her current home.

The best-documented picture of Whoopi Goldberg’s real-estate history includes five notable properties: a Victorian property in Berkeley, California; a Streamline Moderne mansion in Pacific Palisades; a 745-acre estate in Marlboro, Vermont; a full-floor loft in Manhattan’s SoHo; and a Colonial-style mansion in West Orange, New Jersey. The New Jersey property is the only one identified by the strongest recent reporting as her current home.

This is a history of publicly reported purchases, listings, and sales—not a complete deed search. Celebrity properties can be held through trusts or other entities, and public articles do not establish that every property was a full-time residence. The figures below are reported transaction prices, not independently audited valuations.

1. Berkeley, California: an early Victorian property

Goldberg bought the Berkeley property in 1985 for approximately $335,000. The principal house was an approximately 1,455-square-foot Victorian-style residence dating to around 1890. It came with a converted two-story barn—described as a cottage or guesthouse—of roughly 1,635 square feet.

The property’s period character included a New Orleans-style porch and other historic architectural details. Later descriptions identified three bedrooms, an updated kitchen, formal living and dining rooms, a detached cottage, and five garages.

There is an important qualification to the usual “Whoopi Goldberg’s homes” framing. Berkeleyside reported that Goldberg had owned the property for about 30 years when it was listed in June 2015, but also said it was unclear whether she had ever actually lived there. She had bought it after moving to New York for her Broadway debut. It is therefore more accurate to call this a Berkeley property Goldberg owned than to label it definitively as one of her longtime residences.

The asking price in 2015 was $1.275 million. The Los Angeles Times later reported a sale for $2.025 million—$750,000 above the asking price.

2. Pacific Palisades, California: a historic Streamline Moderne mansion

In the 1990s, Goldberg reportedly purchased a Pacific Palisades mansion for approximately $2.5 million. The house was built in the 1930s and is commonly described as an Art Deco or Streamline Moderne property. Its earlier history added to its appeal: Architectural Digest identified it as having originally been built for Austrian author Vicki Baum and later owned by English actor David Niven.

The approximately 7,039-square-foot mansion reportedly contained:

  • Five bedrooms and seven bathrooms
  • A library
  • Fireplaces and crown moldings
  • A swimming pool and guesthouse
  • Black-and-white marble checkerboard flooring in the foyer

Goldberg reportedly owned the property for approximately 25 years before selling it in 2018 for $8.8 million. That is the relevant Goldberg transaction. Architectural Digest also reported a later sale at $10.5 million, but that was a subsequent transaction and should not be presented as the price Goldberg received.

The Pacific Palisades house is also the property most easily pulled into misinformation. A January 2025 viral claim said that Goldberg’s Los Angeles-area mansion had burned in wildfires. Lead Stories found no evidence for that claim and traced it to a self-described satire and parody site; the image circulated with the claim also appeared likely to be AI-generated. There is no basis in the supplied fact-check for saying that Goldberg’s home was destroyed by the fires.

3. Marlboro, Vermont: a 745-acre country estate

Goldberg purchased a Vermont getaway in 2003 for a reported $950,000. The property in Marlboro consisted of a roughly 6,100-square-foot, 1790 Colonial-style house on approximately 745 acres.

The estate’s outbuildings and rural facilities made it substantially more than a conventional vacation house. Reported features included:

  • Four bedrooms
  • Three full bathrooms and two half-bathrooms
  • A two-bedroom bunkhouse
  • An old brick double-sided fireplace
  • A beehive oven
  • An indoor riding arena
  • Pole barns and a heated horse barn
  • A two-story cement barn used as a woodworking studio

Architectural Digest reported that Goldberg extensively renovated the home in 2004. The property was reportedly sold in November 2012 for approximately $1.5 million. Because the supplied transaction information comes from secondary real-estate reporting rather than a deed record, “reportedly sold” and “about $1.5 million” are the appropriate descriptions.

4. SoHo, Manhattan: the 101 Wooster Street loft

Goldberg’s Manhattan property was a full-floor loft at 101 Wooster Street in SoHo. Architectural Digest described the apartment as approximately 3,800 square feet, with the features associated with a classic converted industrial loft:

  • High ceilings
  • Exposed brick
  • Cast-iron columns
  • Chevron-patterned marble floors
  • A chef’s kitchen

The loft was reportedly purchased around 2007 for approximately $4 million. CityRealty reported that Goldberg sold the two-bedroom apartment to media executive Ben Lerer in 2010 for $3.07 million. Contemporary reports placed the transaction at just under or around $3 million, so “about $3 million” is the safest general description.

The move away from Manhattan was reportedly influenced by privacy concerns. Architectural Digest said Goldberg had become frustrated when people gathered outside while she attempted to sit outdoors. Her business partner, Tom Leonardis, suggested trying New Jersey—a recommendation that led to the next major property in this timeline.

5. West Orange, New Jersey: the reported current home

Goldberg bought her New Jersey home in 2009 for approximately $2.8 million. It is in the gated Llewellyn Park community in West Orange and is described by Architectural Digest as an approximately 9,486-square-foot, eight-bedroom Colonial-style mansion originally built in 1927.

The supplied reporting does not provide a sale for this property. Architectural Digest explicitly identifies Goldberg as currently residing in New Jersey and describes the Llewellyn Park mansion as the home she currently calls home. That makes it the strongest candidate for her present residence, while still leaving room for the normal limitations of public celebrity-property reporting.

Goldberg has occasionally offered glimpses of the interiors. The house reportedly includes an art collection and a deliberately eclectic decorating approach. She has described the look as formal but relaxed, with different periods and styles intentionally placed in contrast rather than made to match in a conventional way.

The community name and city are sufficient for identifying the property in a real-estate-history article. A precise street address is not necessary and is omitted here for privacy and safety reasons.

What this property history says about Goldberg’s taste

Goldberg’s publicly documented portfolio is notable less for a constantly expanding collection of new-build mega-mansions than for its emphasis on older, character-rich properties. The homes span several distinct settings and architectural identities: a Victorian property in Berkeley, a historically pedigreed Art Deco-era mansion in Pacific Palisades, a working country estate in Vermont, an industrial-style Manhattan loft, and a large Colonial house in New Jersey.

The properties also reflect changing priorities. The Berkeley purchase belongs to an early-career period but may not have been a full-time residence. The SoHo loft offered Manhattan space and architectural character, while the move to New Jersey addressed the privacy problems Goldberg reportedly experienced in the city. The Vermont estate provided acreage, barns, and equestrian facilities rather than simply more interior square footage.

Frequently repeated claims to treat carefully

  • “Goldberg lived in every property listed.” Not established. The Berkeley reporting specifically questioned whether she ever lived at that address.
  • “Goldberg still owns the Pacific Palisades mansion.” The reported sale took place in 2018.
  • “The Los Angeles mansion burned in the 2025 wildfires.” A fact-check found the viral claim unsupported and linked it to a parody source.
  • “The reported sale prices are official valuations.” They are transaction figures reported by real-estate and news publications, not appraisals or a complete title search.

On the evidence available, the clearest summary is that Whoopi Goldberg has owned a varied group of historic and architecturally distinctive properties across California, Vermont, New York, and New Jersey. Of the five best-documented properties, the West Orange estate is the only one identified as her current home; the other four have reported sales or, in Berkeley’s case, a sale following a period of uncertain occupancy.
