Prince Aerion Targaryen’s team is Prince Daeron Targaryen, Prince Maekar Targaryen, Ser Steffon Fossoway, Ser Willem Wylde, Ser Donnel of Duskendale and Ser Roland Crakehall. That makes seven champions on each side, counting Dunk and Aerion themselves.
Who fights for Dunk and Aerion?
The completed lineups in the Ashford trial are:
| Dunk’s side | Aerion’s side |
|---|---|
| Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk) | Prince Aerion Targaryen |
| Prince Baelor Targaryen | Prince Daeron Targaryen |
| Ser Lyonel Baratheon | Prince Maekar Targaryen |
| Ser Raymun Fossoway | Ser Steffon Fossoway |
| Ser Humfrey Beesbury | Ser Willem Wylde |
| Ser Humfrey Hardyng | Ser Donnel of Duskendale |
| Ser Robyn Rhysling | Ser Roland Crakehall |
Wylde, Donnel and Crakehall are Kingsguard. The roster is listed in the TV Guide episode guide and the A Wiki of Ice and Fire account of the trial.
Why is Steffon Fossoway on Aerion’s side?
Steffon initially agrees to fight for Dunk, but Aerion persuades him to change sides by promising him a lordship. Raymun, Steffon’s cousin, offers to take his place. Lyonel knights Raymun, and Baelor joins Dunk’s side as its final champion. That is why early discussion of the teams may place Steffon with Dunk: he changes allegiance before the lineups are complete. The sequence is also recounted by TV Guide and GamesRadar+.
What is a trial of seven?
It is a form of trial by combat in which seven champions fight for each side. In the story’s religious tradition, the practice is associated with the Faith of the Seven and Andal custom: the belief was that honoring the Seven with seven champions might prompt the gods to intervene in the pursuit of justice. That is the fictional rationale behind the ritual, not a claim about real-world religious practice. The Ashford trial is described as the first in more than a century and is dated to 209 AC in the series’ in-world chronology; see A Wiki of Ice and Fire.

Where does this story come from?
The story is based on George R. R. Martin’s novella The Hedge Knight, which is included with the other published Dunk and Egg novellas in the collected A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. The novella’s account shares the central roster, though adaptation details can differ. For what the television episode depicts, the episode-specific account is the better guide. An overview of the collection and related adaptations is available in this book overview.
