A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is set about 100 years before Game of Thrones, placing it between that series and House of the Dragon in the franchise timeline. HBO describes House of the Dragon as taking place 200 years before Game of Thrones. Those are rounded intervals, not exact in-world dates.
Is A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms before or after House of the Dragon?
It comes after House of the Dragon and before Game of Thrones. HBO places House of the Dragon about 200 years before Game of Thrones, while A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is about 100 years before it. The franchise order is therefore:
- House of the Dragon — about 200 years before Game of Thrones.
- A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms — about 100 years before Game of Thrones.
- Game of Thrones — the latest of these three periods.
These placements follow HBO’s descriptions of House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. They establish the shows’ relative order, not precise calendar years or episode-by-episode dates.
How many years before Game of Thrones is Dunk and Egg’s story?
HBO’s rounded description puts the story about a century—roughly 100 years—before Game of Thrones. It follows Ser Duncan the Tall, known as Dunk, and Egg, the boy who becomes his squire. The Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the last dragon remains within living memory, according to HBO’s series announcement.

The century-scale description is the useful answer for viewing order. It should not be converted into an exact year: the official descriptions cited here do not provide one.
What part of the story does the first season adapt?
Season one adapts George R. R. Martin’s novella The Hedge Knight. HBO’s episode-one synopsis begins with Dunk traveling to a tournament at Ashford, where he meets Egg. That makes the series a more intimate entry into Westeros than the other shows’ broad dynastic framing, while keeping it within the Targaryen era.

What comes next in the adaptation?
HBO announced season two for 2027, and the Associated Press reported that it is based on Martin’s novella The Sworn Sword. These are dated production plans, not guarantees that a release schedule cannot change. See HBO’s renewals announcement and the Associated Press interview with showrunner Ira Parker.
Should you read the book before watching?
No. Reading is optional; the show is an adaptation, not a continuation that requires advance knowledge of the books. For the underlying stories, Penguin Random House describes A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms as a collected edition of three official Dunk and Egg novellas. HBO identifies The Hedge Knight as the first season’s source.
