Dunk and Egg’s stories take place roughly ninety years before A Game of Thrones, while the Targaryens still rule from the Iron Throne. The three published novellas follow this order: The Hedge Knight, The Sworn Sword, and The Mystery Knight.
When do Dunk and Egg’s stories take place?
George R. R. Martin places the stories “about ninety years” before the opening of A Game of Thrones, in a period when the Targaryens still sat the Iron Throne. That is a rounded relative date, not an exact calendar year for each adventure. Martin’s October 6, 2015 post introduces the collected volume and gives that broad placement.
What order should you read the Dunk and Egg stories in?
The collected book presents the three published novellas in this sequence:
- The Hedge Knight: Dunk and Egg first meet during a tournament at Ashford Meadow.
- The Sworn Sword.
- The Mystery Knight.
Martin described The Hedge Knight as the story of their first meeting in a post dated April 14, 2023. The official description of The Mystery Knight places its events during Aerys I’s reign, sixteen years after a failed rebellion; it does not supply a settled exact year for the novella. The publisher’s description gives that relative context.

How does the series connect to Game of Thrones?
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is a prequel story set in the same Westeros history as A Song of Ice and Fire and Game of Thrones. Its focus is the earlier Targaryen era, rather than the events of the main series. The collected volume brings together the three novellas; Martin’s 2015 announcement identifies it as their first collection.
The screen adaptation is an adaptation of the Dunk and Egg stories, not a continuation of the main series. In April 2023, Martin said the planned first season would adapt The Hedge Knight, the first published novella. That statement records the plan announced then; it should not be read as a current production or release schedule. A December 2025 author post used future-facing language about Dunk and Egg content, but does not by itself establish a current release date. Martin’s December 2025 post.

Are exact years known for each novella?
The cited official descriptions establish the broad position before A Game of Thrones, the novella order, and some relative historical details. They do not establish an exact in-world year for each story. For a reliable timeline, keep the distinction clear: the stories are about ninety years before the main saga, but that rounded interval is not a year-by-year dating system.
