Hackers do not share one soundtrack. In a September 2020 Dark Reading feature, nine security researchers described tastes ranging from classical and opera to hip-hop, punk, lo-fi, jazz and video game scores. Their answers are personal snapshots—not a survey of hackers or proof that music boosts productivity.
What do hackers listen to?
In Steve Zurier’s September 18, 2020 Dark Reading feature, nine security researchers answered what they listen to when they want to get energized or concentrate. Their choices cut across genres and moods rather than confirming the stereotype of a hacker with a wall of dark electronic music.
- Electronic and soundtrack music: Interviewees named symphonic electronica, trance, and film or game scores, including Daft Punk’s Tron: Legacy and Nobuo Uematsu’s Final Fantasy music.
- Hip-hop and rap: Choices included hip-hop, rap, and nerdcore artists such as Dual Core and MC Ohm-I.
- Classical and opera: The range included classical selections and Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana.
- Other styles: Interviewees also mentioned jazz, funk and Motown, punk and ska, classic rock, lo-fi, Sigur Rós and Gotan Project.
These are examples from the interview, not a ranked playlist or a tested recipe for getting work done. The format is a set of individual accounts, not a representative study.
How do they choose music for different kinds of work?
Some interviewees described changing the soundtrack to match the task. Stephanie “Snow” Carruthers said she uses electro pop while testing, then turns to lo-fi or jazz for reporting. Marcus Carey described a similar shift: electronic music or hip-hop for one mood, instrumental or classical music when he wants fewer distractions.

That contrast suggests a practical way to explore your own preferences: distinguish music for energy from music for sustained, writing-heavy work. It is an interpretation of the interviewees’ experiences, not evidence that one genre works better for a particular task.
Do lyrics make it harder to concentrate?
That depends on the listener. Georgia Weidman said English-language lyrics interrupt her concentration when she is deep into work. Carey, by contrast, said lyrics in languages he does not understand do not distract him. The accounts point to a personal variable—not a universal rule that vocals always help or hinder focus.

If lyrics compete with what you are doing, try instrumental tracks or music whose words you do not follow. If they do not, there is no reason to treat silence as the only serious way to work.

What about headphones and distraction?
Tarik Saleh, a malware researcher at DomainTools, said he prefers a good pair of noise-canceling headphones. That is one person’s approach, not a product recommendation or evidence that noise cancellation improves concentration for everyone. The feature does not compare headphone models or test their performance.

What the playlist can—and cannot—tell you
The interviews show how varied security researchers’ musical tastes can be and how individual listeners may adapt music to a task. They do not measure how many hackers listen to music, establish that music improves productivity, or identify a genre that works best. Treat the recommendations as listening prompts, then choose what suits your own work and preferences.
