A Death in the Gunj is worth watching for its quietly accumulating tension, period atmosphere and sensitive performances—especially Vikrant Massey’s portrayal of Shutu. Konkona Sen Sharma’s feature directorial debut is less satisfying if you want a tightly plotted thriller: its emotional force comes from the way a holiday group treats one of its most vulnerable members.
What is A Death in the Gunj about?
Set in 1979 in McCluskiegunj, the film follows Shutu (Vikrant Massey), who joins relatives and family friends for a holiday. The group is held together by old family and friendship ties, but familiar teasing and social rituals gradually take on a crueler edge. The story’s tension grows through those interactions and through the group’s slow recognition of Shutu’s vulnerability, rather than through a puzzle-box mystery.

That focus makes the film a drama with thriller elements, not a conventional, fast-moving mystery. The Indian Express’s Shubhra Gupta praised its layered depiction of “the games people play” and their consequences. Read The Indian Express review.
How good is Vikrant Massey in the film?
Massey gives Shutu a quiet sensitivity that provides the film with its emotional center. In a large ensemble, he makes the character’s unease and isolation legible without turning every moment into an overt appeal for sympathy. The performance also gives the audience a steady point of view as the group’s behavior shifts from casually familiar to painful.

The supporting cast—including Gulshan Devaiah, Tillotama Shome, Kalki Koechlin, Ranvir Shorey, Tanuja, Om Puri and Jim Sarbh—helps build the social world around him. The group is not simply a backdrop: its jokes, alliances and habits are part of the pressure Shutu faces.
What works best: atmosphere and group dynamics
The period setting and measured pace are central to the experience. Rather than rush from incident to incident, Sharma lets the holiday’s textures and small social exchanges accumulate. That patience gives the film its melancholy and makes its portrayal of habitual group cruelty linger after the viewing.
Scroll likewise highlighted the period style and melancholy, while noting weaknesses in the plotting and character development. Read Scroll’s review. Those reservations are worth keeping in view: atmosphere and performances are more compelling than a forceful, tightly engineered plot.
Will the slow pace and plot work for you?
Choose this film if you enjoy slow-burn ensemble drama, period texture and stories that draw tension from social behavior. Its central interest is how a group’s ordinary interactions can become damaging, not a succession of thriller twists.

You may be less satisfied if you expect the mystery elements to drive a brisk plot, or if you want every character’s development to feel equally complete. Some viewers may find the plotting and characterization less strong than the mood and acting; that is a critical reservation, not a universal response.
