The voice performer, who has played the fox across games, television, and films, describes a character who now feels part of a team and family—and a movie performance shaped by higher stakes.
How Colleen O’Shaughnessey joined the Sonic universe
In a December 24, 2024 interview with Sabina Graves for io9, O’Shaughnessey traced her franchise history to Sonic Colors, where her first Sonic-universe role was Charmy Bee. She later auditioned for Sonic Boom, booked Tails, and went on to voice the character in games as well as the films. That is a progression across projects, not a claim that she voiced Tails in every Sonic release.
She recalled wanting to bring animals to life through voice: “I so wanted animals to be able to talk. So I gave them voices.”
How Tails changes in Sonic the Hedgehog 3
O’Shaughnessey contrasts Tails’s nervousness when he first met Sonic in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 with the greater confidence he brings to the third film. “He’s more confident, he feels part of the team, and part of a family,” she said.

In her account, that growth shows up in how Tails handles pressure. He has important work to do, helps keep the team’s plan together, and is better able to contribute when events become difficult. These are O’Shaughnessey’s observations about the character’s place in the film, rather than a full plot synopsis.
Why the film calls for a more grounded voice
O’Shaughnessey says her basic approach to Tails remains consistent across games, television, and film; the circumstances around him change. The movies put the characters in more dangerous situations with higher stakes, so she made the performance more grounded and serious. “So it’s more grounded. It’s more serious. It’s more cinematic, for sure.”

She connected that adjustment to Sonic Frontiers, which she had recorded just before beginning work on the second movie. She described the game as more serious and dialogue-heavy than earlier entries, and said that experience helped prepare her for a shift toward a more cinematic performance.
In the interview, Graves raised darker elements associated with Sonic Adventure 2. O’Shaughnessey’s answer focused on Tails’s ability to help the team under pressure and on his growing confidence, rather than offering a direct comparison between the film and that game.
