Why the holiday totals are larger
A single-day gross answers how much each film took in on Christmas Day. It is not interchangeable with a weekend estimate or a multi-day holiday opening. In its Dec. 29, 2024 report, the Associated Press put Nosferatu at an estimated $40.3 million over its first five days and A Complete Unknown at $23.2 million since Christmas. Those totals cover longer, different windows than Dec. 25 alone.

- New York, 1961. A young Bob Dylan (Timothée Chalamet) arrives with his guitar and revolutionary talent, forging relationships with music icons on his meteoric rise which culminates in a groundbreaking and controversial performance that reverberates worldwide. Warning: Some flashing-lights scenes in this film may affect photosensitive viewers.
The same AP report estimated Friday-to-Sunday grosses of $21.2 million for Nosferatu and $11.6 million for A Complete Unknown. It described the Dylan film’s five-day result as a Searchlight Pictures record since Disney acquired the company in early 2019. These are contemporary estimates as reported on Dec. 29, not the two films’ Christmas Day grosses. Variety’s Dec. 31 report gave a nearby estimate of $40.8 million for Nosferatu over five days and $23.2 million for A Complete Unknown; the reports should be read as dated estimates rather than blended into one figure.

Christmas fell on a Wednesday in 2024, and studios were watching both the usual Friday-to-Sunday weekend and the extended five-day holiday frame. AP quoted Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian saying, “Every day was like Saturday at the box office because of the way the holidays lined up.” That describes the unusually favorable calendar in this particular holiday period, not a rule for every Christmas release.

Nosferatu’s Christmas opening was an unconventional choice for a gothic horror film. AP reported that the release drew moviegoers aged 18 to 34, and quoted Focus Features distribution head Lisa Bunnell calling the decision risky. Variety later quoted Bunnell saying exhibitors were taken aback by the idea of a gothic story opening on Christmas Day. Dergarabedian told Variety the date helped make the film an event for moviegoers.
AP also reported that sarcophagus-inspired Nosferatu popcorn buckets were being resold for more than $100 during the opening period. That was a resale observation in the Dec. 29, 2024 report, not a current price or indication of present availability.
