Alanis Morissette, Gwen Stefani, Tori Amos, Liz Phair and Shirley Manson remain connected to music in different ways: through new recordings, live work, band plans and reflection on their careers. This is a representative group—not a definitive roster of everyone’s favorites—because “alternative” in the 1990s covered a wide range of rock and singer-songwriter styles.
Alanis Morissette: revisiting the story behind Jagged Little Pill
Morissette’s 1995 breakthrough, Jagged Little Pill, is a natural starting point for her continuing story. The album remains a defining link between her 1990s success and her later work. In a June 2025 interview, she reflected on the predatory dynamics she says she encountered in the music industry during that decade, alongside her present-day life and public work. The Guardian’s interview and Elle’s 2025 feature marking the album’s 30th anniversary offer recent context for looking back without treating the era as uncomplicated nostalgia.
Her recording career has continued beyond that landmark. AllMusic’s biography lists Such Pretty Forks in the Road (2020) and a 2025 collaboration with Carly Simon, “Coming Round Again.” AllMusic’s Morissette biography provides the release context. For a physical connection to the story, search for Jagged Little Pill on CD; editions and availability can vary.
Gwen Stefani: making music beyond her No Doubt years
Stefani’s path runs from No Doubt’s alternative-rock era into a solo career and other projects. In a November 15, 2024 interview, she discussed new music associated with Bouquet. Vogue described it as her first full-length solo album in nearly a decade, excluding holiday releases. That is a dated snapshot of her activity at the time, not a claim about her later release schedule. Read Vogue’s interview about Bouquet for the album’s late-2024 context.

Tori Amos: live work, new releases and a longer view
Amos’s recent activity reaches beyond revisiting her best-known work. AllMusic lists Diving Deep: Live (2024) and a children’s album in 2025, reflecting different strands of her recording career. AllMusic’s Amos biography provides that release context.
In a March 2025 interview with Salon, Amos also spoke about creative work and the narrowing opportunities she sees for women as they age in music. Salon’s interview places her current perspective alongside an active body of work, rather than reducing her to a figure from the 1990s. Liz Phair: a return with Soberish
Phair’s most recent album established in the cited profile is Soberish (2021), her first album in eleven years. Vogue’s profile connects that return with her earlier alternative-rock career and the way an artist’s past work can shape expectations for what comes next. Read Vogue’s profile of Phair and Soberish.
That profile supports the album and career context; it does not establish a newer release or current touring schedule. Those details should not be inferred from the 2021 album’s reception or from Phair’s earlier career.

Shirley Manson: Garbage’s touring and recording plans
Manson’s story is inseparable from Garbage, the band she fronts. In a 2025 interview with NME, she discussed the realities of touring and the band’s plans for another record, while describing touring as increasingly difficult. These are her plans and observations as reported at interview time, not confirmation of a current schedule or a later release. Read NME’s interview with Manson for the dated account.

These artists have not followed one common post-1990s route. Morissette’s recent coverage brings a landmark album into conversation with present-day reflection; Stefani was promoting new solo music in late 2024; Amos has continued with live and other releases; Phair’s cited recent album is Soberish; and Manson’s 2025 interview focused on touring and Garbage’s recording plans. Together, they show why “where are they now?” is best answered artist by artist, rather than with a single nostalgia narrative.
