This list is tied to the June 7–9, 2024 weekend, when nine new releases landed across Netflix, Disney+, Max, Hulu, Paramount+, Starz and premium video-on-demand. It is not a current 2026 watch guide, but it remains a useful snapshot of that weekend’s strongest streaming arrivals—especially for viewers who like real-world settings, investigative tension and character-driven stories.
The lineup includes five series and four films. Hit Man and Perfect Days are the clearest film choices for documentary-minded viewers: one turns an unusual real-life law-enforcement setup into a comic crime story, while the other observes an ordinary working life with unusual patience.
TV shows
1. Star Wars: The Acolyte — Disney+
The Acolyte is a mystery-thriller set during the High Republic era, roughly a century before Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace. Its opening episodes were already available during the June 7–9 weekend.
For viewers who enjoy historical documentaries, the appeal is less about continuity homework and more about the setting: the series explores an earlier period of the Star Wars timeline, when the Jedi and Republic occupied a different political and cultural landscape. The central mystery gives the show a darker investigative shape than a straightforward space adventure.

Best for: viewers who want a period mystery inside a large science-fiction universe.
2. Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2 — Paramount+
The BAU returns on Paramount+ with a case involving the Gold Star conspiracy. The new season also keeps serial killer Elias Voit close to the team after his transfer into federal custody. Season 2 premiered on June 6, making it available for the weekend.
This is a natural choice for fans of investigative documentaries and true-crime analysis, although it is fictionalized television rather than a documentary. The story combines a larger conspiracy with the behavioral profiling and procedural investigation that define the franchise.
Best for: viewers who prefer serial investigations, criminal psychology and an ongoing conspiracy over standalone episodes.
3. Sweet Tooth season 3 — Netflix
The eight-episode third season is the final chapter of Netflix’s post-apocalyptic fantasy series. Gus and his companions travel to Alaska in search of his mother and continue investigating the origins of the Sick.
The Alaska journey gives the final season a more explicitly exploratory structure. Alongside the fantasy elements, the series follows questions about disease, survival, human experimentation and the relationship between scientific explanations and competing belief systems. It premiered on June 6, so the complete season was available to watch over the weekend.
Best for: viewers looking for a finished, world-building-heavy series with a science-and-survival premise.
4. Perfect Match season 2 — Netflix
Nick Lachey returns to host Netflix’s reality-dating competition, which brings contestants from the platform’s other reality shows together to form relationships and compete for compatibility.

Netflix released episodes 1–6 on June 7. Episodes 7–9 followed on June 14, with the finale arriving June 21, so this was a partial-season premiere rather than a complete binge release.
It is not a documentary, but it belongs to the unscripted television tradition: the drama comes from casting, interpersonal decisions and the format’s controlled social experiment. Viewers interested in how reality shows manufacture pressure and narrative turning points may find more to analyze than the dating premise suggests.
Best for: fans of competitive reality television who do not mind watching week by week.
5. Power Book II: Ghost season 4 — Starz
The fourth season of Power Book II: Ghost premiered on Starz on June 7, 2024. It follows Tariq St. Patrick and his allies through the show’s final run, with episodes released weekly.

Its second half began on September 6, making this a long-running weekly commitment rather than a complete weekend binge. The series centers on organized crime, loyalty and the consequences of trying to build power inside competing criminal networks.
Best for: viewers who want serialized crime drama and are comfortable following a season across a release schedule.

6. Hit Man — Netflix
Richard Linklater’s Hit Man stars Glen Powell as Gary Johnson, a college professor who secretly assists the New Orleans Police Department by posing as a contract killer. The film began streaming on Netflix on June 7.
The premise is rooted in the unusual real-life work of a psychology professor who helped law enforcement stage fake hit-man encounters. The film turns that setup into a romantic crime comedy, so it is not a factual account of the case. Still, its starting point—an ordinary academic adopting a series of criminal personas for undercover operations—gives it a strong documentary-adjacent hook.

7. Am I OK? — Max
In Am I OK?, Dakota Johnson plays Lucy, a woman who realizes later in life that she is a lesbian while her closest friend prepares to move to London. Tig Notaro and Stephanie Allynne directed the film, which arrived on Max on June 6.
The film is built around friendship, self-discovery and the disruption caused when two people’s lives begin moving in different directions. It is a quieter option than the crime and horror titles in this group, with its focus placed on personal identity and the difficulty of acknowledging a truth that has been present but unspoken.
Best for: viewers looking for an intimate character study rather than a plot-heavy thriller.
8. Perfect Days — Hulu
Wim Wenders’ Perfect Days follows Hirayama, played by Kōji Yakusho, a Tokyo toilet cleaner whose carefully ordered routine is unsettled by a series of unexpected encounters. The film began streaming on Hulu on June 6.
This is the strongest match here for documentary viewers who appreciate observational filmmaking. Wenders pays close attention to work, repetition, public spaces and small changes in behavior. Hirayama’s daily schedule—cleaning facilities, listening to music, reading and photographing trees—becomes the film’s subject as much as its story.
Perfect Days was also Japan’s submission for the 2024 Academy Award for Best International Feature. Its pace is deliberate, making it better suited to a focused viewing than casual background watching.
Best for: viewers who enjoy contemplative portraits of ordinary lives and films shaped by routine rather than plot twists.

9. The Strangers: Chapter 1 — premium video-on-demand
The Strangers: Chapter 1 is a horror reboot about a young couple stranded at a remote cabin and attacked by three masked assailants. During the June 7–9 weekend, it was available through premium digital rental or purchase, including Amazon—not as part of a standard subscription streaming catalog.
That distinction matters when planning a weekend watch: access required an additional rental or purchase fee. The film opened theatrically on May 17, 2024, before moving to digital storefronts.
Best for: horror viewers who want a contained survival story and do not mind paying separately for a new release.
