Public statements show that Elon Musk’s relationships with his children are not one story: Vivian Wilson has described estrangement and disputed her father’s account, while the other children’s private relationships are mostly undocumented. The clearest facts come from interviews and dated reporting; public appearances and family counts cannot establish who is close to whom.
What is publicly known about Elon Musk’s relationships with his children?
The public record is uneven. Vivian Wilson, Musk’s daughter with his first wife, Justine Wilson, has spoken at length about their relationship. Musk has also publicly discussed their conflict. For most of his other children, there is little or no comparable firsthand testimony. The observations below describe what family members have said or what reporting records—not a ranking of private relationships.
1. Vivian Wilson has described the relationship as estranged
In July 2024, Wilson told The Washington Post, “He doesn’t know what I was like as a child because he quite simply wasn’t there.” The paper also reported that she had formally severed ties with him more than two years earlier. Those are Wilson’s account and the paper’s reporting, not an independent assessment of their private history. The Washington Post’s 2024 report provides her remarks and the surrounding context.
2. Musk has given a different explanation for the rift
Musk has publicly attributed the conflict in part to schooling and made claims about Wilson’s gender-affirming care. These are his stated explanations, not independently established causes of their estrangement. Coverage of his comments and Wilson’s response is available from The Washington Post and Vanity Fair.

3. Wilson rejects her father’s portrayal of her childhood
Wilson called Musk’s characterization of her childhood “entirely fake” and said she was harassed for her femininity and queerness. That is her account; it directly conflicts with the picture Musk has publicly offered. Teen Vogue’s interview with Wilson and The Washington Post’s report document her response.
4. She has described her mother as supportive
In her Teen Vogue interview, Wilson said her mother supported her transition and her choices about college and speaking publicly: “She’s been supportive of the choices that I have made in college, about being public.” Wilson also said the attention around her public statements stresses her mother. Her comments describe her own experience, not a general account of the family’s private life. Teen Vogue published the interview in March 2025.

What has Wilson said about her half-siblings?
5. She says she learned about some siblings indirectly
Wilson told Teen Vogue that she learned about Shivon Zilis’s children when the news became public and learned about a child of Grimes through a post on Reddit. Her account illustrates how little direct information she said she had about parts of the wider sibling group; it does not establish what contact exists among the children today. Teen Vogue records her account.
6. She does not know how many half-siblings she has
“I will say I do not actually know how many siblings I have, if you include half-siblings,” Wilson told Teen Vogue. Her statement is a personal account of her knowledge, not a definitive count of Musk’s children.

7. Public visibility varies, but it does not reveal closeness
Reporting has noted that X, Musk’s child with Grimes, has appeared with him at some public and work-related events, while Griffin, Wilson’s twin, has largely stayed out of the spotlight. An appearance can show that a child was present at an event; it cannot establish the quality of a private parent-child relationship. Biography.com’s family overview describes differences in public visibility.
What does recent reporting say about Musk and Shivon Zilis?
8. Zilis said their romantic relationship had ended and expressed hope for shared parenting
In a report dated October 4, 2026, EL PAÍS quoted a public post from Zilis saying, “It’s hard to go from in love to let go in a week with no warning, but that’s just how it is sometimes 🤷🏻♀️” The paper reported her announcement that the romantic relationship had ended and that she hoped they could remain friends and share parenting of their four children. That is Zilis’s publicly stated hope, not proof of the private parenting arrangement. EL PAÍS’s October 2026 report describes her post.

How many children does Musk have?
9. Published totals depend on the date and what is counted
There is no single timeless total in the cited coverage. Teen Vogue, citing public reporting in 2025, described Musk as having fourteen children with four mothers across a 20-year span. Biography.com, accessed in 2026, lists nine living sons and four daughters. Those figures use different dates and categories, including whether a child who died in infancy is counted; they should not be treated as interchangeable. Teen Vogue and Biography.com give their respective descriptions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the public record cannot establish
Several of Musk’s children are minors or largely out of public view, and the cited coverage does not provide firsthand accounts from the less-public children about their relationships with him. The evidence therefore supports no reliable ranking of who is closest to Musk, who is estranged, or how day-to-day parenting works across the family. Silence and limited visibility are not evidence of either closeness or distance.
