This selection features nine films whose central stories are tied to real people or events. It is shorter than 35 because the available film-specific evidence supports these nine titles, not a defensible list of 35. Each entry identifies its real-life subject and the kind of emotional experience it offers; the films should not be treated as equally faithful scene by scene.

What “based on a true story” can—and can’t—tell you

A film can have a documented real-life foundation while still inventing dialogue, compressing time, changing the order of events, or combining supporting figures. TIME’s standard for a true-story film is that its central story concerns real people and that a character based on a real person does things their counterpart actually did. That standard does not make every scene a historical record.

Schindler’s List illustrates the distinction. TIME reports that Oskar Schindler is credited with saving more than 1,000 Jewish people by employing them at his munitions factory in Brünnlitz. The film depicts one list, but TIME says there was more than one in reality and that Plaszów camp orderly Marcel Goldberg, not Schindler, wrote the lists. The central rescue story is real; a memorable screen detail is simplified.

Films about persecution, injustice, and public action

12 Years a Slave (2013)

Solomon Northup was a free African-American man kidnapped in 1841 and sold into slavery in Louisiana. The film is based on his 1853 memoir, alongside historical research. Historian Manisha Sinha, the Draper Chair in American History at the University of Connecticut, praised it as meeting a high standard of historical accuracy and artistic excellence. Its emotional force comes from the violence of enslavement and the injustice of a man’s freedom being taken from him.

Selma (2014)

The film centers on the voting-rights march across Selma’s Edmund Pettus Bridge on March 7, 1965, when police attacked demonstrators. TIME reports that 17 marchers were hospitalized and 50 received treatment for lesser injuries that day; those figures are TIME’s account, rather than independently verified primary-record figures here. Expect a story driven by danger, collective courage, and the cost of demanding political rights.

Schindler’s List

Oskar Schindler’s employment of Jewish people at his factory in Brünnlitz is the basis for this Holocaust drama. TIME credits him with saving more than 1,000 people. The film’s list imagery is not a literal one-to-one account of how the lists were made, as noted above. Its subject matter is persecution and survival under Nazi rule.

Films about crime, investigation, and suspicion

Spotlight (2015)

Spotlight follows the real Boston Globe investigative team whose reporting exposed a cover-up of clergy sexual abuse. TIME notes that the team published its first story in the series in January 2002. Rather than building its tension around a single dramatic confrontation, the film’s intensity comes from patient reporting and the growing weight of what the journalists uncover.

The Good Nurse (2022)

Adapted from Charles Graeber’s 2013 true-crime book, the film follows nurse Amy Loughren as she suspects colleague Charles Cullen is involved in patient deaths. Netflix Tudum identifies this as the story’s real-life basis. Its emotional register is dread and uncertainty, with suspicion unfolding inside a workplace where patients depend on care.

Woman of the Hour (2024)

Netflix Tudum describes the film as based on Rodney Alcala’s story, including his appearance on The Dating Game alongside Sheryl Bradshaw’s story. That premise brings menace into a setting ordinarily associated with entertainment and romance. The film draws on a real criminal case, but the source account does not establish that every scene reproduces documented events.

Films about survival and family separation

Society of the Snow

Netflix Tudum describes this as a retelling of the 1972 Andes plane-crash survival story involving a Uruguayan rugby team. The film draws on Pablo Vierci’s 2008 book. Its central emotional experience is endurance in an extreme survival situation, rather than a conventional biography of one person.

Rank #4

Lion

Adapted from Saroo Brierley’s memoir A Long Way Home, Lion follows his search for his birth family, according to Netflix Tudum. Its heartbreak is rooted in family separation; its hope comes from the effort to reconnect. The memoir is the stated source, so the film’s dramatic scenes should not automatically be read as a verbatim record.

A musical based on a family memoir

The Sound of Music (1965)

The film draws on Maria von Trapp’s memoir, but TIME notes differences between the real people and their screen portrayals. That makes it a different kind of true-story watch from the crime, persecution, and survival dramas above: its real-life foundation is a family’s story, shaped into a musical. The memoir connection is established; it does not mean every characterization or event is exact.
