9 Anime Set in the Real World: Real Places Behind the Stories

From Akihabara and Tokyo landmarks to Hakone, Chichibu, and a journey across Japan, these nine anime draw on recognizable real-world places in different ways.

These nine anime connect their stories to recognizable places in Japan, from Tokyo streets and Hakone to rural Yamanashi and a cross-country journey. The connection varies: some name a real city or show identifiable landmarks; others imagine a fictional place inspired by a real region. That does not mean the stories’ extraordinary events happened there.

How these anime connect to real places

A real-world setting can mean a story names an actual city, features recognizable landmarks, or uses a real region as the model for a fictional place. Those are different kinds of connections, so the locations below are described as associations or inspirations rather than proof that every scene matches a real site.

Visiting places linked to anime is often called anime tourism or anime pilgrimage. The academic term seichi junrei means “pilgrimage to a sacred site”; Shige (CJ) Suzuki describes the practice in a 2019 article in the International Journal of Communication: “The activity of visiting a place modeled or featured in anime or manga is now called seichi junrei, meaning ‘pilgrimage to a sacred site.’”

Nine anime with real-world location connections

1. Suzume: a journey across Japan

Makoto Shinkai’s 2022 film is a road movie rather than a single-city story. Its route is associated with Miyazaki, Oita, Ehime, Hyogo, Tokyo, and Iwate. The roundup identifies Nichinan in Miyazaki as a model and the old Bungomori Kikanko in Oita as a symbolic location, as well as ports, stations, and the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge. Think of it as a geographically expansive journey, not a compact sightseeing circuit.

2. Your Name: Tokyo and Takayama

The 2016 film draws on locations in Tokyo and Takayama, Gifu. Tokyo associations include Suga Shrine, Yotsuya and Shinjuku stations, and the National Art Center. In Takayama, Hida-Furukawa Station is among the identified locations. Together, the examples link the film to both a major city and a regional town.

3. Weathering with You: recognizable Tokyo landmarks

The 2019 film is associated especially with Shinjuku and other parts of Tokyo. Named examples include the Atami Building, Cocoon Tower, Shiba Park, and Tokyo Tower. Yoyogi Kaikan Building is also associated with the film, but it has been demolished, so it is historical context rather than a stop visitors can see today.

4. Laid-Back Camp: Yamanashi and Mt. Fuji country

This camping series uses locations in Yamanashi and areas near Mt. Fuji. Real-life camping sites associated with the show have drawn fans, making it a natural choice for viewers interested in outdoor scenery rather than city landmarks. A site’s appearance in the series does not establish that it remains open to visitors or permits anime-related visits; check its current rules before planning a stop.

5. Neon Genesis Evangelion: Hakone behind fictional Tokyo-3

The futuristic city Tokyo-3 is fictional, but it is associated with Hakone in Kanagawa, beside Lake Ashi. That makes Hakone an inspiration for the imagined city—not Tokyo-3 itself. The roundup also identifies the EVA-YA official store near Hakone-Yumoto Station as a fan-oriented location.

6. Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day: Chichibu

The series is associated with Chichibu in Saitama. Mt. Buko, Old Chichibu Bridge, and Muku Shrine are among the named local connections. These place names give the story a clear regional anchor; visitors should check access conditions and be considerate of residents and local facilities.

7. Steins;Gate: Akihabara, Tokyo

Steins;Gate is set in Akihabara, the Tokyo district known for electronics and pop culture. The roundup names Akihabara Station, Radio Kaikan, and Manseibashi Bridge. This is an urban setting connection, not a guarantee that every building or event depicted in the series corresponds exactly to a real one.

8. Belle: a town modeled on Kochi

Mamoru Hosoda’s 2021 film moves between the real world and an online world. The protagonist’s town is modeled on Ochi Town in Kochi, and associated locations include Asao Submerged Bridge, Yasui Valley Suishobuchi, and stations and streets along the Niyodo River. The real-world scenery provides a regional basis for a story that also takes place in a virtual environment.

9. Erased: Tomakomai, Hokkaido

Tomakomai is identified as the primary real-world inspiration for Erased. Associated places include Tomakomai Midorigaoka Park, a municipal elementary school, and New Chitose Airport. Treat schools and other working facilities with particular care: an association with a series does not grant access to grounds or buildings.

Which anime location connection suits your trip?

The best match depends on whether you want a concentrated city setting, a cluster of regional landmarks, or scenery tied to an outdoor story. The examples below compare the kinds of connections identified for each title; they do not establish a walkable route or current access.

Anime Connection type Geographic scope Setting character
Suzume Named regions and associated landmarks Road journey through several prefectures Ports, stations, bridge, and changing landscapes
Your Name Recognizable real locations Tokyo and Takayama City landmarks and regional town
Weathering with You Associated Tokyo landmarks Tokyo, especially Shinjuku Dense city streets and landmarks
Laid-Back Camp Real-life outdoor locations associated with the series Yamanashi and Mt. Fuji area Camping and rural scenery
Neon Genesis Evangelion Real region inspiring a fictional city Hakone, Kanagawa Mountain and lakeside setting
Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day Associated local landmarks Chichibu, Saitama Regional town and surrounding landscape
Steins;Gate Named urban setting and associated landmarks Akihabara, Tokyo City district
Belle Fictional town modeled on a real region Ochi and the Niyodo River area, Kochi River, rural scenery, and virtual world
Erased Real-world inspiration and associated locations Tomakomai, Hokkaido City and regional sites

Plan visits with access and local context in mind

Location lists can help identify places to investigate, but they are not current travel guides. The examples collected for these titles do not establish transport schedules, admission rules, walkability, or permission to visit each site. Confirm details with local or official sources before setting out.

  • Check whether a location is still present and accessible. Yoyogi Kaikan Building, associated with Weathering with You, has been demolished.
  • Respect homes, businesses, schools, farms, and other working facilities. A 2019 academic article on anime tourism notes that the production company behind Silver Spoon asked viewers not to visit an agricultural facility or its vicinity.
  • Follow posted rules and avoid disrupting residents or staff, even when a location is widely identified by fans.
  • For a multi-stop journey, verify distances and transport independently rather than assuming sites can be reached on foot or in one day.

Some specialist travel services describe arranging visits to anime-related locations. For example, Hokkaido Treasure Island Travel Inc. describes personalized visits with a driver and an English-speaking guide on its anime pilgrimage travel page. Its page is dated 2024-11-20 and says it was last updated 2025-03-14; that information does not establish current availability or pricing.
