Stark argued that rejecting Buck’s realization about his bisexuality conflicts with the series’ emphasis on love and inclusion.
What happened in Buck and Tommy’s kiss?
The kiss closed the April 4, 2024 episode, in which Evan “Buck” Buckley, played by Oliver Stark, recognizes that his feelings for Tommy Kinard, played by Lou Ferrigno Jr., go beyond friendship. In a TVLine interview published the same day, Stark described Buck’s jealousy over Eddie’s new friendship with Tommy as part of the buildup.
Stark said he understood Buck as bisexual: “That’s the way I have it in my head. We’ll see flashes of how he might look to label it in the next episode, but yeah, I think that would be the correct term.” That is Stark’s interpretation of the character, rather than a claim about how the show had already formally labeled Buck.
What did Oliver Stark say about the backlash?
Stark addressed the response in an Instagram Story posted April 6, two days after the episode aired. ABC Audio reported that he welcomed supportive messages and answered commenters who said the storyline had ruined the show. Its report reproduced his words:

“This is a show about love and inclusion,” his message continued. “It’s featured queer relationships from the very beginning, including a beautiful Black lesbian marriage played out by two of the best actresses I’ve ever watched.”
“If one other character finding a new facet to his sexuality and [realizing] his bisexuality is your deal breaker — I fear you’ve missed the entire point of the show.”
“You are not required to announce your departure.”
ABC Audio, TVLine, Them and Us Weekly also reported Stark’s response and its context. Their accounts describe negative comments as homophobic backlash, but they do not quantify those comments or establish how representative they were of the audience as a whole. The available coverage supports saying that some commenters objected—not that viewers broadly rejected the story.
How Stark described the character’s arc
In TVLine’s April 4 interview, Stark said Buck’s story had included “crumbs for years and years” and told fans who had read Buck as queer, “You were right.” He also acknowledged that those earlier moments may not have been intentionally written as clues when they first appeared. His comments describe how he now sees the arc, not proof that every earlier scene was deliberate foreshadowing.
Stark said he became emotional watching the kiss and described it as a moment of clarity for Buck. He also said Buck had not understood his feelings during the episode and was surprised by what the kiss meant to him.

What the showrunner said about the storyline
In the same TVLine interview, showrunner Tim Minear said he preferred the story to unfold with someone viewers already knew rather than “invent some bi character for Buck to have an awakening with.” Minear also said the storyline affected Buck’s relationships with Maddie and Eddie and created opportunities to explore feelings and vulnerability. Those are Minear’s explanations of the creative approach, not independent evidence about how every part of the story was developed.
