Spoilers for 9-1-1 Season 8, Episode 6, “Confessions.” The episode turns its title into more than a reference to Eddie’s conversation with a priest: Buck, Tommy and Maddie also face disclosures and decisions that change their relationships. Showrunner Tim Minear explained the intertwined stories in a TV Insider interview published November 7, 2024.
Why the episode is called “Confessions”
Eddie’s literal confession gives the title its clearest meaning, but Minear said the idea also extends to emotional unburdening. Eddie speaks to a priest who does not already know his story, making the conversation a chance to say aloud what he has been carrying. Minear connected the scene to Eddie’s renewed relationship with faith—or, as he put it, his “tradition of faith”—after the previous season.
The episode’s other turns broaden that frame: Tommy reveals a connection to Buck’s past, Buck confronts what he wants from the relationship, and Maddie tells Chimney she is pregnant. These are not all confessions in the same literal sense; together, they make the hour about what characters disclose and what those disclosures force them to reconsider.
What Tommy’s revelation means for Buck
Tommy tells Buck that he is the same Tommy who was Abby’s long-term partner before she left Los Angeles. Buck processes the news with Maddie and Josh, then decides to continue the relationship. He even suggests that he and Tommy move in together. Tommy instead breaks up with him.

Minear framed Tommy’s decision around his belief that Buck was still figuring himself out after beginning a relationship with a man. He also said Tommy’s concern about moving in made sense because he saw Buck as impulsive. That is the showrunner’s explanation of Tommy’s perspective; the episode’s outcome is clear regardless: Buck and Tommy do not move in together, and their relationship ends in this episode.
Eddie’s guilt and the path back to Christopher
Eddie’s conversation with the priest centers on guilt and his tendency to punish himself. Minear described him as denying himself joy and carrying survivor’s guilt. The episode contrasts that emotional burden with Eddie letting loose in a “Risky Business” dance, a moment Minear said he wanted viewers to see.

Minear also connected Eddie’s next steps to repairing his relationship with Christopher. Rather than continuing to punish himself, Eddie needs to find another way to reconnect with his son. The confession is therefore not a neat resolution: it marks a moment of honesty within a larger effort to change how Eddie handles grief, guilt and distance.
Maddie’s pregnancy and the conversation with Chimney
Maddie raises the possibility of having another child with Chimney. Their discussion is emotionally delicate because of Chimney’s concern about Maddie’s previous postpartum crisis. Maddie then reveals that she is pregnant.

Minear said he did not intend to repeat the same story from Maddie’s earlier postpartum experience. His comments describe the creative direction of the storyline, not medical guidance or a prediction about how postpartum experiences unfold in real life.
