It strongly implies that Howard “Chimney” Han is Bobby Nash’s likely successor. Hen declines the role, and the finale’s closing exchange gives Chimney the clearest sign of the team’s confidence in him.
Why the finale points to Chimney
After Bobby’s death, the 118 has a leadership vacancy. Vincent Gerrard leads the team temporarily while a permanent replacement is expected later, according to TheWrap’s May 1, 2025 recap.
The strongest case for Chimney comes after the building-collapse rescue. He urges the team to stay together and carry on Bobby’s approach: getting everyone home safely. He calls the 118 Bobby’s legacy. Hen answers, “Copy that, cap… I mean, Chim,” a pointed slip that treats Chimney as the team’s leader. Athena also tells him Bobby saw him as a capable paramedic and a great leader, as detailed in TVLine’s May 15, 2025 finale breakdown.
Why Hen is not the new captain
Hen is another obvious candidate, but she turns down the promotion. The finale coverage says she wants more time with her family. Her decision leaves Chimney as the strongest in-house possibility suggested by the episode; it does not make his appointment official.

What the ending confirms—and what it doesn’t
The distinction is important: Chimney’s succession is strongly implied, not formally announced. TVLine notes that he does not officially become captain during the episode. A TV Insider cast interview published May 15, 2025 also described the Season 9 captaincy as unconfirmed at that point. Gerrard, meanwhile, is presented as temporary leadership rather than the finale’s likely permanent choice.

Maddie gives birth to a son, whom she and Chimney name Robert Nash Han. When Athena visits and says, “Hello, Bobby,” she is greeting the newborn named for Bobby—not revealing that Captain Bobby Nash survived or faked his death.
