Spoilers for the season-five premiere of 9-1-1: Lone Star. Grace Ryder leaves her family to volunteer aboard a Mercy Ship after a church presentation prompts her to help orphans. Co-showrunner Rashad Raisani said the writers chose that religious calling instead of killing Grace off, aiming to give the character a reason to leave that matched the scale of what she was giving up.
What happened to Grace Ryder?
In the season-five premiere, Judd explains that Grace has gone to volunteer aboard a Mercy Ship. A presentation at the Ryders’ church moved her after she heard about orphans in need. As Judd describes it, Grace understood the timing was difficult but believed she had felt God’s call. The choice leaves Judd at home with their young daughter during an already difficult period for the family, with Wyatt also recently paralyzed. TVLine’s season-five premiere interview with Raisani recounted the story behind Grace’s departure.
Why did the writers choose a religious calling instead of killing Grace off?
Raisani told TVLine that the writers quickly ruled out killing Grace, which did not feel like the right way to treat her character. They needed a reason significant enough to pull her away from both her family and her job as a 9-1-1 operator. As he put it: “The only thing we could think of to justifiably pull Grace away from her family and job was an even greater calling. And the only thing in Grace’s world that could answer that was God.”
Raisani recognized that the decision could divide viewers. “People are allowed to feel the feelings they have about it, but we did all we could do to protect her character,” he said, adding that biblical stories often involve people answering a call from God even when it hurts those they love. His defense was about the story choice, not a claim that every viewer would find Grace’s decision convincing.

How did the exit change Judd and Wyatt’s stories?
McClain’s departure forced changes after at least four season-five scripts had already been written, Raisani told TV Insider. The writers shifted some of the emotional focus to Judd, exploring what it meant for him to lose the person Raisani described as his emotional center. Raisani also said the challenge gave Judd a more nuanced story.
Wyatt’s path changed, too. The original idea was for him to learn more from Grace in the call center. With Grace gone, his development as a dispatcher happened sooner. The exit therefore affected more than the explanation for Grace’s absence: it changed how the show developed both the family left behind and the next generation at the dispatch center.

What was the original plan for Judd and Grace?
In a December 2024 interview with TV Insider, Raisani described a different trajectory for the couple. The plan had been for Grace to experience a spiritual crisis, reversing their usual dynamic of supporting one another. He said they likely would have ended the series happy, probably with a second child. That was the story the writers had imagined before McClain did not return and Grace was written out.

Raisani’s interviews explain how the writers responded to McClain’s departure and why they chose a calling as the story reason for Grace’s absence. They do not establish why McClain did not return for season five. Raisani told TV Guide that the team wanted to honor McClain as an actor and protect Grace as a character, while leaving room for Grace to return if McClain could come back. That is an account of the writers’ intent; it does not supply a cause for the actor’s non-return.
