Spoilers for the series finale, “Homecoming.” The asteroid hits Austin, but no main character dies in the finale. A second emergency—a nuclear reactor at risk of meltdown—puts the 126 in danger before Owen Strand reaches the controls and stops the disaster. Owen and Tommy Vega both survive, as do the other principal characters. The episode then jumps ahead to show where the team’s lives go next.
How the asteroid crisis ends
Season 5’s preceding episode, “Impact,” ends with Austin bracing for an asteroid strike; FOX scheduled it for January 27, 2025. “Homecoming,” the series finale, aired February 3, 2025, and shifts the danger from the impact itself to a nuclear emergency at a nuclear facility. FOX’s “Impact” schedule sets up the approaching asteroid, while FOX’s “Homecoming” schedule identifies the finale and its aftermath crisis.
Owen gets to the reactor controls and prevents a meltdown. The emergency injures responders, but it does not claim the life of a main character. Co-showrunner Rashad Raisani confirmed that the main characters survive both disasters in interviews with TheWrap and TV Guide.
Does Owen die in the 9-1-1: Lone Star finale?
No. The reactor sequence makes Owen’s fate look uncertain, but he survives and prevents the meltdown. In the time-jump epilogue, he leaves Austin for a fire-chief job in New York. Raisani described the move as a change Owen needed; with the 126 healed, the team no longer depended on him in the same way.

Tommy also survives the crisis. She is in remission in the epilogue. Raisani told TheWrap he had promised actress Gina Torres that he would not kill Tommy, and the cast discussed the character’s outcome in a TV Insider aftershow.
Where the main characters end up
| Character | Finale outcome |
|---|---|
| Owen Strand | Survives the reactor emergency, then takes a fire-chief job in New York. |
| Tommy Vega | Survives and is in remission in the time-jump ending. |
| Judd Ryder | Becomes captain of the 126 after Owen leaves, bringing his arc full circle: he began the series as the sole survivor of a fire that killed his former 126 colleagues. |
| T.K. Strand and Carlos Reyes | Adopt T.K.’s half-brother Jonah after an adoption assessment initially raises concerns about their dangerous jobs. T.K. leaves his first-responder role to become a stay-at-home father. |
| Mateo Chavez | Survives. After his immigration status is threatened earlier in the two-part story, his heroism leads to him being fast-tracked for citizenship in the show’s storyline. |
| Marjan Marwani | Survives a serious injury in the facility explosion; the epilogue reveals she is pregnant. |
| Paul Strickland | Is injured in the facility emergency and survives. |
The character outcomes are described in TheWrap’s finale interview and, for Judd and T.K. and Carlos, in TV Insider’s cast aftershow. Mateo’s fictional citizenship outcome belongs to the show’s plot; it should not be read as an account of how real immigration procedures work.

Why the finale makes survival look uncertain
The episode uses the scale of the asteroid aftermath and the reactor emergency to create apparent danger for Owen and Tommy. Raisani said his aim was to leave viewers with hope: “I wanted people to leave with a sense of hope,” he told TheWrap. He also told TV Guide that the creative team seriously considered killing Owen before deciding against it. Those are the showrunner’s explanations for the choices, not a guarantee that every viewer will read the suspense the same way.
