Nancy Gillian serves as captain of the 126 during the later part of 9-1-1: Lone Star Season 5. But the available interviews do not explain exactly what Tommy Vega decided or establish that her decision directly caused Nancy’s promotion. The showrunner’s later comments about Tommy and Nancy leading the department describe a possible Season 6 story that was never made.
What role did Nancy take in Season 5?
Nancy, played by Brianna Baker, is a paramedic at the 126. FOX’s Season 5 synopsis initially described her working with T.K. under captain Tommy Vega’s guidance. By the season’s late run, Nancy was serving as captain: a December 17, 2024 TV Insider interview referred to her in that role.
That establishes the change in Nancy’s position, but not the precise circumstances behind it. The interview asked co-showrunner Rashad Raisani whether Tommy would return to the 126 before the series ended. He declined to answer because it would spoil the story; he did not explain the decision or handoff that put Nancy in the captain’s role. TV Insider’s interview about the final episodes therefore confirms Nancy’s role while leaving the cause unresolved.
What did the showrunner say about Tommy and Nancy?
After the finale, Raisani discussed a hypothetical sixth season with TV Insider. He said he would have liked Tommy to rise to a higher position in the Austin Fire Department, “as a chief medical officer,” and allow Nancy “to take the role that she had.” His remarks look ahead to a season that was never produced; they are not an explanation of what happened onscreen in Season 5.

The distinction matters because the interview offers an imagined direction for the characters, not confirmation that Tommy made a particular choice that led to Nancy’s promotion. Raisani’s post-finale interview frames the leadership idea as something he would have wanted to explore in Season 6.
How Tommy and Nancy’s stories intersected
Season 5 also gave the characters a connection beyond their work at the firehouse. In Episode 6, Nancy learned that the lump she had found was a macrocyst, while Tommy received a breast cancer diagnosis. In an interview about the episode, Gina Torres and Brianna Baker discussed the way the storyline shifted their characters’ relationship. Their TV Insider conversation focuses on that personal story, rather than specifying the decision behind Nancy’s captaincy.

What viewers can take from the ending
Season 5 was the series’ final season, and the finale aired in February 2025. Raisani told TheWrap, “I wanted people to leave with a sense of hope,” describing the emotional aim of the ending. Because the series concluded without a sixth season, his proposed Tommy-and-Nancy leadership arrangement remained an unrealized idea. TheWrap’s finale interview discusses the ending and notes Hulu as a place to stream the series; availability can vary by region and change over time.

FOX announced the season premiere for September 23, 2024, and its preview described a train derailment in the opening multi-episode storyline. At that point, the official synopsis still presented Tommy as the captain guiding Nancy and T.K. The later reference to Nancy as captain documents how her role stood near the end of the season, but neither that early synopsis nor the interviews establish the full mechanics of the transition. FOX’s Season 5 announcement provides the season’s initial setup.
