8chan returned as 8kun in early November 2019 after losing major infrastructure support in August. The site largely preserved its anonymous imageboard model, while displaying a stronger warning against content illegal under U.S. law. That was a platform rule—not proof that the site had eliminated extremist or otherwise harmful material.
8chan did not return as an entirely new social network. After losing major infrastructure support in August 2019, the anonymous imageboard reappeared intermittently over the November 2–4 weekend under a new name: 8kun. The relaunch kept much of 8chan’s structure and attracted many of its former boards, while adding a more prominent warning that content illegal under United States law would be removed.
That warning was a stated platform rule—not evidence that 8kun had solved the broader problems associated with 8chan, including extremist material, harassment, threats or dangerous misinformation. The relaunch instead became an early and important example of how deplatforming can disrupt an online community without necessarily eliminating it.
Why 8chan went offline
8chan came under intense scrutiny after manifestos or related material appeared on the site before or around several mass shootings. Reporting connected the site to material associated with the Christchurch mosque attack, the Poway synagogue shooting and the 2019 El Paso Walmart shooting. In an August 5, 2019 statement, Cloudflare said the suspected El Paso attacker appeared to have posted a screed to 8chan immediately before the attack, following similar concerns about Christchurch.

Cloudflare subsequently terminated its service to 8chan. That decision was one part of a wider infrastructure breakdown. Content-delivery, hosting, domain and other service providers withdrew support or became unwilling to continue serving the site. The shutdown therefore was not simply the result of one government order; it was the result of pressure on the collection of private companies that helped keep 8chan reachable.
This distinction is important. A website can remain online in principle while becoming difficult to access after losing its domain services, hosting, content-delivery network and security providers. Activists, journalists and researchers identified companies supporting 8chan, while operators sought replacement services and new technical routes. The episode showed that online speech depends not only on the site owner but also on a chain of infrastructure providers.
What changed when 8chan became 8kun?
The most visible changes were the name, logo and front-page rules. The new name, 8kun, preserved a clear connection to 8chan rather than presenting a wholly unrelated service. In Japanese honorific usage, “kun” is commonly associated with boys or young men, while “chan” is a diminutive honorific. In practical terms, the change functioned primarily as a rebrand and an attempt to restart the site after the 8chan identity had become closely associated with controversy.
The relaunch also placed greater emphasis on a rule against illegal content. Contemporary reporting described 8kun as saying that material illegal under U.S. law would be removed. The site’s current guidance presents the same basic global rule: users must not post, request or link to content illegal in the United States, and users must not create boards for distributing such content.
That is narrower than a general promise to remove harmful or extremist material. A rule focused on illegality does not automatically prohibit every hateful statement, extremist argument, threat, harassment campaign or piece of dangerous misinformation. The distinction between illegal and harmful content was central to questions about whether the relaunch represented meaningful moderation reform.

Did all of 8chan’s boards move to 8kun?
No. Many former 8chan boards migrated or attempted to migrate, but it would be inaccurate to say that every board or user moved. The relaunch was gradual and unstable, and the availability of particular boards changed over time.
One notable omission at the beginning was /pol/, the politically oriented board associated in contemporary coverage with extremist content and manifestos linked to mass shootings. Reports said it was not initially present, but they also cautioned that it was unclear whether the omission was deliberate or temporary. Its absence at launch was therefore not proof that 8kun had adopted comprehensive moderation or permanently removed the community associated with it.
The underlying model remained recognizable: anonymous imageboards organized around user-created or board-specific communities, with relatively limited centralized moderation. The rebrand changed the public presentation and some stated rules, but it did not by itself establish a new governance system.

What did 8kun’s rules actually promise?
8chan’s historical operating model emphasized minimal centralized intervention. The basic global restriction focused on material illegal under U.S. law, while users were generally treated as responsible for their own posts. Board-level processes could apply additional rules, but the site’s central administration did not present itself as enforcing a broad code covering all objectionable speech.
8kun’s published guidance continues to describe that division of responsibility. Its global rule prohibits illegal U.S. content, while the administration says that users are responsible for what they post and that boards may have their own processes. The guidance should be read as the platform’s stated policy, not as an independently verified account of everything that appeared on the site or of how consistently rules were enforced.

That caveat matters especially in coverage involving extremist communities. Saying that 8kun would remove illegal material is not the same as saying it would remove all white-supremacist propaganda, extremist recruitment, abusive behavior or conspiracy claims. Nor does a prominent warning establish that a platform successfully prevented such material from being posted.
The relaunch was technically unstable
8kun’s return was not a smooth restoration. During the November 2019 relaunch, reports described the site moving among providers, including Russian hosting companies. Activists contacted firms identified as hosting or supporting the site, and at least two providers reportedly cut service after learning more about 8kun’s identity.

The site was periodically reachable through alternative or dark-web infrastructure after the initial relaunch. These measures illustrated both the persistence of the operators and the practical difficulty of keeping a controversial site continuously available when mainstream providers withdraw.
A version of 8kun was also made available through Lokinet, an experimental privacy-oriented network. Loki representatives said that 8kun had not been invited and that Lokinet had not been built for the site. Some staff nevertheless provided limited technical information because the network was open source. At that time, reporting characterized Lokinet as experimental and vulnerable to attacks, so its involvement should not be understood as evidence of a stable or officially endorsed hosting arrangement.
Why changing providers mattered
The infrastructure struggle exposed a tension in online platform governance. Deplatforming can reduce a site’s mainstream visibility, advertising access and perceived legitimacy. It can also make a site harder to find and less convenient to use. But cutting off major providers does not necessarily destroy the community itself.

Operators may seek smaller providers, foreign hosting companies, alternative domain arrangements, peer-to-peer systems or privacy-focused networks. Those substitutes are often less reliable and may reach fewer people, but they can provide enough continuity for a community to regroup. The 8chan-to-8kun transition demonstrated that infrastructure companies can impose significant costs without having complete control over whether a determined group remains online.

A 2024 scholarly analysis treats the episode as part of a larger contest involving activists, journalists, infrastructure companies and platform operators. Its broader point is that deplatforming changes reach and operating conditions rather than producing a simple on/off outcome. A community can lose mainstream distribution while continuing through marginal infrastructure and parallel technical ecosystems.
What is 8kun today?
The current 8kun site, 8kun.top, presents itself as active and displays hundreds of boards and ongoing posting activity. It also shows age and legality warnings and continues to publish a rule against content illegal in the United States.
Those observations describe what the site reports about itself. They are not an independent audit of its user numbers, influence, reach, moderation quality or safety. Current activity should also not be confused with the specific news event covered here: the reappearance occurred in early November 2019, not in 2026.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the 8kun relaunch tells us
- It was a rebrand and relaunch, not a wholly new platform. The anonymous imageboard format and much of the community continuity remained.
- The legal-content warning was limited. It addressed material illegal under U.S. law and did not amount to a comprehensive promise to remove all harmful or extremist content.
- The missing /pol/ board was not conclusive. Its initial absence could not establish that it had been permanently removed or that broad moderation had been adopted.
- Deplatforming disrupted access but did not end the community. The site repeatedly searched for replacement infrastructure.
- Infrastructure is part of platform governance. Hosting, domain, security and delivery companies can influence a site’s reach even when they do not control its editorial rules.
In short, 8chan’s appearance as 8kun was an effort to preserve continuity after a major infrastructure collapse. The new name and stronger legal warning addressed the site’s public image and stated boundaries, but they did not, on their own, demonstrate a fundamental change in moderation. The episode remains significant because it showed both the power and the limits of private deplatforming.
