A good subtitle file has to match more than the film or episode title. The release version, frame rate, episode number and language all matter. A subtitle made for a 23.976 fps WEB-DL can drift badly when used with a 25 fps broadcast file.
These eight subtitle sites cover different needs: large general-purpose archives, television-focused databases, movie-release indexes and newer alternatives to Subscene. Availability changes, and several older sites now have unreliable or legacy interfaces, so the notes below distinguish verified current features from claims that should be treated cautiously.
Before downloading: identify your video
Check the filename of your movie or episode before searching. Useful details include:
- Title and year: remakes often share the same name.
- Season and episode: use a format such as
S02E04where possible. - Release tag: examples include
WEB-DL,WEBRip,BluRay,HDRipandDVDRip. - Frame rate: 23.976, 24, 25 and 29.97 fps versions may require different subtitle timing.
- Runtime: an extended or director’s cut may not match the theatrical release.
After downloading, extract the archive if necessary and rename the subtitle to match the video filename. For example:

VLC, MPC-HC, MPV and most modern television apps can load .srt, .ass and several other subtitle formats directly. Do not assume every downloaded file is safe: subtitle files have been used as an attack vector against vulnerable media players. Keep your player updated, scan downloads, and be especially cautious with executable files or archives containing anything other than subtitle files.
1. OpenSubtitles
OpenSubtitles is one of the broadest places to begin when you need subtitles for a film, documentary or television episode. The current domain is opensubtitles.com; older guides commonly point to opensubtitles.org, but those instructions describe the former site rather than the redesigned service.
Its reported subtitle formats include SRT, SUB, TXT, ASS and SSA. That range is useful if your player supports styled subtitles or if an older video uses a less common format. Search by exact title, year and release details rather than choosing the first result.
The current site returned an HTTP 403 during inspection, so the present search and download button labels could not be independently confirmed. Treat guides that give precise instructions for the old /en/search/subs page as potentially outdated.

2. SubDL
SubDL is a strong general-purpose choice for both movies and TV shows. Its homepage has a search field labelled “Search Movies and TV shows or IMDB ID”, making an IMDb identifier useful when a title produces too many results.
On a TV title page, look for:
- Languages and Filter Languages to narrow the results;
- Specials and individual season sections;
- Last on top to see newer uploads;
- Upload if you need to contribute a file.
SubDL currently lists active releases and says it provides a searchable mirror of Subscene material. That does not mean SubDL and Subscene are the same service: Subscene shut down in May 2024, while SubDL remains a separate, active site.
3. Addic7ed
Addic7ed is primarily associated with community-produced subtitles for television series. It can be particularly useful for recently broadcast episodes, where timing and dialogue may be available sooner than on larger general archives.

Reported navigation includes Shows, Sign up, Login, Join the Team and Forum. The reported subtitle format is SRT, which most current media players can open without conversion.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAvailability is a significant weakness. During checking, the homepage displayed a MySQL connection failure: User admin_addic7ed already has more than 'max_user_connections' active connections, followed by Database connection error. If the site will not load, the problem is likely server-side rather than a mistake in your search. Do not rely on claims that it is always available or consistently ad-free.
4. Podnapisi
Podnapisi is intended for movies, TV series and miniseries. Older and current guides describe an Advanced Search with filters for keywords, year, movie type, season, episode and frame rate.
Frame-rate filtering is valuable when subtitles appear gradually out of sync. If your video is 25 fps, a subtitle tagged for 23.976 fps is not necessarily interchangeable, even when both files have the same title.
One practical detail reported for Podnapisi is that many downloads arrive as ZIP archives containing an SRT file. Extract the archive before loading the subtitle into your player. The site returned HTTP 502 during inspection, so its current page layout and exact download path should be treated as unverified until the service is reachable.

5. TVsubtitles.net
TVsubtitles.net is organized around television shows rather than a broad movie catalogue. Its top navigation includes Home, TV Shows, New, Top, Add and Feedback.
The usual route is show first, then season, then episode. A season page displays episode identifiers such as 3x07 and 3x06, episode titles and subtitle counts. Language choices are represented by flag icons in the episode table, so check the flag carefully before downloading.

The site is not merely a dormant archive. Its homepage reported recent uploads, including entries for Silo and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. It also reported more than 304,000 subtitles and 86,000 TV episodes, although those counters change over time.
Despite the site’s “TV” focus, the homepage includes a movie link leading to Moviesubtitles.org. For a documentary film, use the separate movie service rather than expecting every title to appear in the TV database.
6. Moviesubtitles.org
Moviesubtitles.org is a movie-focused archive whose homepage describes its files as subtitles for DivX/Xvid movies. Its navigation includes Home, Movies, New, Top, Add and Feedback.
The service explicitly says that its subtitles are packed with WinZip and must be unpacked before use. A typical workflow is:
- Download the archive for the correct film and release.
- Open it with your operating system’s archive utility or a trusted ZIP tool.
- Extract the SRT file to the video’s folder.
- Rename it so the base filename matches the movie.
The homepage lists release labels such as YTS, WEBRip, BluRay, DVDRip and HDRip, which can help you choose between otherwise similar results. It also maintains language categories including English, French, Spanish, Arabic, Turkish, Polish, Russian, Italian, German and Ukrainian.
Its recommendation to install DirectVobSub applies to old DivX/Xvid playback in Windows Media Player. It is not a general requirement for VLC, MPC-HC, MPV or other modern players.

For a documentary series, the TV section and season-based URLs can be more useful than a general title search. The documented season URL pattern is:
https://subsource.net/subtitles/show-slug/season-number
The exact download-button wording could not be verified on the inspected season page, so use the current page labels rather than following an old screenshot or tutorial.
SubSource also has a visible developer and contributor side. Its footer links to API documentation, profiles, ranks, terms, privacy, DMCA and support. Registered users can generate an API key from My Profile. Former Subscene contributors can create an account, select Did you own a Subscene.com account?, then submit a support ticket titled Claim Subscene profile.

YIFY Subtitles is commonly associated with YIFY/YTS movie releases. A current guide describes it as movie-only and focused on SRT files, with categories or filters reported for trending titles, 4K, 3D, genre, rating, release year and language.
This is most useful when your film filename contains a YIFY or YTS release reference. It is not a dependable source for television episodes: current descriptions classify the service as movie-focused, even though some reported navigation includes a “Browse Series” label.
There is also a reliability warning. Some download buttons have reportedly redirected to unrelated third-party sites or failed to provide a subtitle file. The current domain and interface could not be independently inspected, so do not treat the URL or any particular button sequence as guaranteed. Leave the site if a download redirects repeatedly, requests an executable, or asks for unnecessary personal information.

First check whether you downloaded the wrong release. A subtitle can be perfectly timed and still fail with a different cut or frame rate. If the mismatch is constant, use your player’s subtitle delay control:

- Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- In VLC, use Tools > Track Synchronization, then adjust Subtitle track synchronization.
- In MPC-HC, use the subtitle delay controls or keyboard shortcuts configured under Options > Keys.
- In MPV, subtitle delay can be adjusted during playback with the configured subtitle-delay keys.
A constant offset can be corrected this way. If subtitles start correctly but drift further out of sync, find a file matched to the video’s frame rate or use a subtitle editor to rescale the timing. For a documentary series, also verify that the file is for the same episode cut: broadcast versions, streaming versions and extended editions may have different durations and dialogue.
Which site should you try first?
| Need | Best starting point | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Broad movie and TV coverage | OpenSubtitles or SubDL | Check the exact release and current site availability. |
| Recent television episodes | Addic7ed or TVsubtitles.net | Addic7ed may show database connection errors. |
| Advanced movie or frame-rate searching | Podnapisi | The site returned HTTP 502 during checking. |
| Older movie-release archives | Moviesubtitles.org | Downloads are commonly ZIP-packed. |
| Newer Subscene-style archive | SubDL or SubSource | They are separate services, not the old Subscene site. |
| YIFY/YTS movie releases | YIFY Subtitles | Movie-focused and reported to have unreliable redirects. |
FAQ
What is the best subtitle site for documentaries?
Start with SubDL or OpenSubtitles for broad coverage. For documentary TV series, TVsubtitles.net and SubSource are useful alternatives. Search using the documentary’s year, season, episode and release tag rather than title alone.
Are Subscene and SubDL the same website?
No. Subscene shut down in May 2024. SubDL is a separate active service that says it maintains a searchable mirror of Subscene material.
Why is my subtitle out of sync?
The file may belong to a different release, cut or frame rate. Compare the video runtime and release tag with the subtitle listing. A constant offset can be corrected with your player’s subtitle-delay control; progressive drift usually requires a correctly matched or rescaled file.
Are downloaded subtitle files safe?
Do not assume they are harmless. Keep your media player updated, scan archives, and avoid any download containing executable files. A normal subtitle download should generally contain a subtitle file such as SRT or ASS, not an installer or program.
The Bottom Line
For the highest chance of finding a match, begin with SubDL or OpenSubtitles, then try a specialist service such as TVsubtitles.net for a series or Moviesubtitles.org for an older film release. Match the subtitle to the exact video version, extract ZIP files before loading them, and treat redirects, server errors and unexpected file types as reasons to stop rather than click through.
