8 Met Gala Rules and Etiquette Guests Are Expected to Follow

Met Gala guests enter by invitation, follow a dress code tied to that year’s Costume Institute exhibition, and navigate an evening shaped by assigned arrival times, seating, staff direction, and reported phone and social-media restrictions. These are not eight items from a published official rulebook: some are reported event policies, while others are practical guidance and etiquette from people who have attended.

What kind of rules are these?

The Met Gala raises funds for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute and is traditionally held around the opening of its annual fashion exhibition. The event is private, and public accounts do not establish every detail of its enforcement or proceedings. The distinctions below matter: a reported policy is not the same as a formal penalty, and attendee advice is not necessarily an official rule.

1. Guests need an invitation to get in

The Associated Press describes the gala as an invitation-based event, not one open to anyone who simply wants to buy a ticket. That establishes the invitation as the gateway; it does not establish a universal formula for who qualifies, or settle every question about companions.

2. Dress for the exhibition-linked theme

The dress code changes with the exhibition, giving guests a new prompt each year rather than a permanent uniform. Vogue reported that the 2025 dress code was “Tailored for You.” The Metropolitan Museum described that code as designed to provide guidance and invite creative interpretation. Two gala veterans told Vogue that looks should reflect the theme while still allowing personal expression. That is a dress-code expectation, not evidence that every guest must interpret it identically.

3. Expect to put your phone away inside

British Vogue reports a no-phone policy at the event. In its 2026 coverage, the Associated Press reported that attendees had stickers placed over their phone cameras after entering the museum—a concrete example of how the restriction may be implemented. Gwendoline Christie told British Vogue that using a phone at the dinner table was “100 per cent no, never, never.” Reports of violations mean the policy should not be mistaken for a guarantee that nobody ever uses a phone.

4. Don’t post from inside the gala

British Vogue connects the no-phone policy with a no-social-media expectation during the event. Treat this as the reported privacy policy for the gala itself, not as a ban on every post made outside the event or after it ends.

5. Keep to your assigned carpet time

Guests have assigned arrival times for the red carpet. La La Anthony advised Vogue readers to stick to their slot so the arrivals keep moving and guests have their turn for photographs. This is attendee guidance about event logistics; the cited account does not describe a formal penalty for arriving at another time.

6. Accept the seating plan without making it awkward

Seating is assigned, and asking who else will be at your table may be poor etiquette. Gwendoline Christie called that question a faux pas; Anthony noted that guests may end up meeting people they did not already know. Neither comment establishes that guests are forbidden from asking.

Vogue’s events team develops the chart as the guest list, room, and layout take shape. Vogue’s director of special events, Sache Taylor, said planning can begin as early as December, while the chart itself takes shape about a month before the gala, once the team has a clearer view of the room and evening’s flow. The seating plan is therefore a moving event-planning decision, not necessarily a guest’s choice.

7. Follow staff direction on the carpet and stairs

Anthony described staff directing guests on when to turn and move up the Met’s steps. Her practical advice was to follow those directions and take your time. This is reported guidance for navigating a busy arrival, not a published rule with a stated penalty for disobeying.

8. The evening continues beyond the red carpet

Accounts from British Vogue and the Associated Press describe a usual sequence that includes check-in, a receiving line, time in the exhibition or cocktail area, and dinner. The carpet is only the public-facing arrival; the event includes the museum exhibition and its dinner program as well. These reports describe the customary flow, not proof that every guest must attend every part or stay until the end. The Associated Press has noted that some attendees leave early.

Claims these accounts do not establish

  • A universal minimum age for guests.
  • A categorical rule that guests cannot bring plus-ones.
  • An official document listing exactly eight rules.
  • Specific eligibility thresholds based on wealth, fame, or influence.
  • Uniform enforcement details for the phone, arrival, or etiquette expectations.

The available accounts support invitation-based access and describe recurring policies and customs, but they do not settle those broader claims. Guest counts also vary by account and edition: British Vogue describes the gala as usually hosting around 600 people, while the Associated Press reported approximately 400 guests at the 2026 event. Neither figure should be treated as a guaranteed count for every year.
