The hijacker known to the public as D.B. Cooper has never been identified, and his fate is still unknown. He bought his ticket as Dan Cooper; the FBI says “D.B.” appears to have begun as a press error. The eight theories below are not equally supported: some reflect the FBI’s own assessment or a former investigator’s working profile, while others remain possibilities that the known evidence cannot settle.
What happened on the flight?
On November 24, 1971, a man using the name Dan Cooper bought a cash, one-way ticket in Portland, Oregon, for Northwest Orient Flight 305 to Seattle. He claimed to have a bomb and demanded four parachutes and $200,000 in twenty-dollar bills. After the plane landed in Seattle, the passengers were released, but several crew members remained aboard. A little after 8 p.m., somewhere between Seattle and Reno, Cooper jumped from the aircraft with a parachute and the ransom money. The FBI’s case history says he carried two parachutes, one of them an instructional parachute that had been sewn shut; he used cord from another to close the money bag. The FBI describes the parachute he used as unsteerable and his clothes and shoes as poor choices for a rough landing. Those details matter, but they do not establish what happened after he left the plane. (FBI case history; FBI artifact and chronology)
1. He died during or soon after the jump
This is the clearest fate theory stated by the FBI. The bureau points to the night jump, wooded terrain, unsteerable parachute, and Cooper’s clothing and footwear as factors that made a safe landing unlikely. The FBI also notes that some ransom bills were later recovered. Taken together, those facts make death a plausible explanation, not a proven one: the available account does not establish where Cooper landed or how he died. (FBI case history)
2. He survived and disappeared
The FBI has not ruled out survival; its official account says Cooper’s ultimate fate remains a mystery. A successful escape would have required him to survive a dangerous jump and then avoid identification. The official materials do not provide proof that he did so, just as they do not prove that he died. Survival therefore remains possible, but it is not an answer established by the record. 3. He knew enough about parachutes to attempt the jump—but may not have been an expert
Special Agent Larry Carr, who worked the case, proposed in a 2009 FBI retrospective that Cooper might have gained familiarity with parachutes through military or aviation work. That is an investigator’s profile, not a verified biography. It also leaves an important distinction: knowing how parachutes work is not the same as having the skill to make a difficult night jump and land safely. The FBI’s description of the equipment and conditions is compatible with limited familiarity, but it does not identify Cooper’s training. (FBI retrospective, March 17, 2009; FBI case history)
4. He had served in the Air Force
Carr’s working profile suggested Cooper may have served in the Air Force and possibly been stationed in Europe. The profile offered a possible way to explain familiarity with aircraft and parachutes; the FBI retrospective does not establish a service record or connect a verified individual to the hijacking. This remains a hypothesis about background, not an identification. (FBI retrospective, March 17, 2009)

5. He worked as an aviation cargo loader
Carr also considered whether Cooper might have worked loading cargo, a job that could have exposed someone to aircraft operations and parachutes. The FBI presented this as part of a possible profile, not as a documented employment history. It may help explain how the hijacker appeared comfortable around an aircraft, but the public case record cited here does not name an employer or verify that Cooper held such a job. (FBI retrospective, March 17, 2009)
6. The name Dan Cooper came from a French comic
The FBI retrospective notes that the French comic series Dan Cooper featured a Royal Canadian Air Force test pilot. Carr thought Cooper might have encountered the series while overseas, making it a possible source for the alias. The connection is intriguing but unconfirmed: no evidence in the cited FBI account proves that the hijacker read the comic or chose his name because of it. The FBI says the better-known “D.B.” label appears to have originated as a press myth; the ticket was purchased under Dan Cooper. (FBI retrospective, March 17, 2009; FBI artifact and chronology)

7. Richard Floyd McCoy was Cooper
Richard Floyd McCoy is an appealing candidate to compare because he carried out a similar parachute hijacking less than five months after the Cooper case. But the FBI investigated the possibility and later ruled him out. Among its reasons, the bureau said McCoy did not match the nearly identical physical descriptions supplied by two flight attendants. The parallel between the crimes is real; the identity claim conflicts with the FBI’s stated conclusion. (FBI case history)
8. The Columbia River ransom money complicates the story
In 1980, Brian Ingram found $5,800 in bills on a Columbia River sandbar. Their serial numbers matched the ransom. That establishes that part of the money reached the sandbar; the FBI sources cited here do not establish when or how it got there. The discovery can fit more than one account: Cooper may have died near the river, the bills may have moved after being lost or buried, or someone may have placed them there. Those are possibilities, not demonstrated explanations, so the recovered money does not by itself prove either death or escape. (FBI case history; FBI retrospective, March 17, 2009)

What is the official status of the case?
On July 8, 2016, after a 45-year NORJAK investigation, the FBI redirected resources away from the case. In its July 12 announcement, the bureau said that tips and investigative techniques had produced no definitive identification, and that it would preserve the evidence for historical purposes. It said it would consider specific physical evidence related to the parachutes or ransom money if submitted to a local FBI field office. The FBI had considered more than 800 suspects by the hijacking’s five-year anniversary, a retrospective agency count rather than a tally of viable candidates. The case remains unresolved in the FBI materials cited here. (FBI Seattle, July 12, 2016; FBI case history)
How to weigh the theories
The theories answer different questions, and they do not share the same evidentiary footing. The FBI’s assessment of the jump conditions supports the possibility of death without proving it. Carr’s Air Force and cargo-loader ideas are attributed working hypotheses, not confirmed records. The comic-book origin is a possible explanation of the alias, and the McCoy comparison was investigated but rejected by the FBI. The money discovery is a confirmed event whose meaning remains uncertain. In 2016, FBI Seattle summarized the central limitation: “none to date have resulted in a definitive identification of the hijacker.” (FBI Seattle, July 12, 2016)
