Sensational Sherri Martel’s larger-than-life presence was only one part of her story. Her recollections and colleagues’ memories reveal the grind of wrestling travel, the confidence she carried off camera, and the care she showed fellow performers. Some accounts below come from interview recaps rather than transcripts, so they are best understood as attributed recollections—not independently verified incident reports.

Who was Sensational Sherri Martel?

Martel was a wrestler as well as one of professional wrestling’s most memorable managers. WWE’s official profile says she began in the AWA in the early 1980s, won its Women’s Championship in 1985 and 1986, then debuted in WWE on July 24, 1987 by defeating her trainer, the Fabulous Moolah, for the Women’s Championship. She later managed Randy Savage, Ted DiBiase and Shawn Michaels, and worked in WCW with Ric Flair and Harlem Heat. WWE credits Harlem Heat with seven WCW Tag Team Championship wins while Martel guided the team. She was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2006, presented by DiBiase.

What was life on the road really like?

1. A punishing cycle of flights, hotels and shows

In a 1995 phone interview published by Evan Ginzburg in 2023, Martel described getting up around 5 a.m. for a 6:30 flight, checking into an airport hotel, sleeping, going to work and then repeating the routine for “12, 13 days.” She said the pace often left little time to eat and took a toll. “It’s just a crazy life, and most of the time, you don’t have time to eat or whatever,” she said. It is a direct account from Martel of the relentless rhythm behind the performances. Read the published interview excerpt.

2. The ride that turned into a six-year grudge

In a 2004 interview, Martel recalled that fellow wrestler Candi Devine was supposed to drive her after a show—but left the arena to chase Stan Lane. Martel said she held a grudge for six years before the two made up. The anecdote, recounted in a 2014 review of the interview, is a road mishap that ended in reconciliation, not evidence of a lasting serious feud. Read the interview recap.

What was Sherri like around other wrestlers?

3. She refused to stay locked in a dressing room

Martel told the same interviewer that she and Miss Elizabeth were going over a finish in a women’s dressing room when Randy Savage left and locked the door. Martel said she felt claustrophobic, put on her boots and kicked the door down. She then told Savage not to lock her in again. The story comes through a reviewer’s recap of Martel’s interview; it offers a specific glimpse of her forceful response, not grounds for a broader claim about her relationships. 4. She made sure she got the celebrity photos

Journalist Mike Mooneyham recalled Martel grabbing his arm on a film set at Los Angeles’s Sportsmen’s Lodge and asking him to photograph her with every actor there. She introduced herself and requested a picture; Mooneyham remembered that no one refused. It is an eyewitness memory of Martel’s confidence and initiative away from the ring. Mooneyham’s remembrance.

5. The Ric Flair heart was a planned reveal

Mooneyham also recalled photographing a temporary image of Ric Flair inside a red heart on Martel’s chest. She concealed it until the storyline moment when she turned away from Brian Pillman and backed Flair. The image was preparation for a wrestling angle—a performance reveal, not evidence of a real-life betrayal. Mooneyham’s remembrance.

6. Harlem Heat chose her as their manager

Stevie Ray recalled that he and Booker T had turned down several proposed managers before Martel approached them at a television taping and asked to manage the team. He remembered their work and travels together warmly: “I mean, that was our best times in WCW, when all three of us worked together.” WWE’s profile records the team’s seven WCW tag-title wins with Martel guiding them, giving the recollection a clear career context. Which stories show her care for colleagues?

7. She shielded Shane Douglas from a fan

A recap of Shane Douglas’s 1994 ECW oral-history interview recounts that a fan struck him with a board. Martel shouted a warning and got on top of Douglas to shield him. Because the account available is a recap rather than the original recording, it is most accurate to treat this as Douglas’s interview recollection as summarized by the reviewer. Read the oral-history recap.

8. Cooking brought wrestlers together at home

Martel also described a quieter kind of camaraderie in the same interview recap: she cooked at home and opened the windows of her apartment, prompting Scott Hall and other wrestlers in the complex to call up and join her. The small domestic detail offers a counterpoint to stories of travel and conflict—a picture of friendship built through ordinary hospitality. Read the interview recap.

What these memories tell us about Sherri Martel

These accounts show a performer whose life involved both hard travel and close working relationships. Martel spoke directly about the cost of the road; Mooneyham remembered her taking the initiative socially and preparing carefully for an on-screen reveal; and Stevie Ray recalled Harlem Heat choosing her and enjoying their time together.
