Adult animation is more than crude sitcoms. These eight series are worth revisiting for their particular strengths: sharp social satire, affectionate family comedy, emotional storytelling, ambitious fantasy, or inventive visual and musical styles. “Secret masterpiece” is a subjective hook, not a claim that these shows are undiscovered or universally acclaimed. The list is a set of distinct places to start, not a ranking.

The eight series
The Boondocks: satire with cultural stakes
Aaron McGruder’s comic strip became a series about Robert “Granddad” Freeman and his grandsons, Huey and Riley, who move from Chicago to a predominantly white suburb. The Week describes it as one of the comparatively few animated series to make a serious effort to address race and privilege in contemporary America, even as it takes a deliberately crass approach. That mix is its defining tension: its comedy can be abrasive, but its subject is not merely provocation for its own sake.

Archer: a spy show with office-comedy instincts
Sterling Archer may be a spy, but the show’s engine is often the friction among colleagues: egos, grudges, and workplace dysfunction survive even when the plot involves espionage. The Week characterizes it as an office comedy wrapped in spy adventure, and quotes Slant Magazine’s description of it as “at once categorically preposterous and occasionally brilliant.” Try it for the ensemble more than for a straight-ahead thriller.
Adventure Time: surreal adventure with adult resonance
Finn and his shape-shifting dog Jake explore a post-apocalyptic world in a series that is all-ages rather than exclusively aimed at adults. Its candy-colored strangeness can lead into surprisingly affecting material about growing up and living with change. Juliet Kleber of The New Republic, quoted by The Week, wrote that “the series treats subjects like loss, romance and aging with great tact and feeling.” Adults looking for emotional range in animation may find that combination more rewarding than a simple “for grown-ups” label suggests.

#1 Best Overall
Bob’s Burgers: gentle comedy built around family friction
The Belchers try to keep their Jersey Shore burger restaurant going while navigating the ordinary chaos of family life. The show’s stakes are smaller and its temperament warmer than that of many cynical animated sitcoms; its humor grows out of the family’s odd rhythms rather than a constant barrage of insults. Slant Magazine’s Joseph Jon Lanthier, as quoted by The Week, called the “offbeat family dynamic” the show’s “greatest asset.”
BoJack Horseman: Hollywood absurdity and real pain
In an alternate Hollywood populated by humans and animals, BoJack is a former sitcom star trying to live with life after fame. The show uses celebrity satire and goofy animal-world absurdity to tell a story that also makes room for addiction, depression, and the consequences of damaging behavior. Emily Nussbaum of The New Yorker, quoted by The Week, called it “one of the wisest, most emotionally ambitious and — this is not a contradiction — spectacularly goofy series on television.” Its emotional intensity is part of the experience, not a promise of easy comfort.
Rank #2
Arcane: class conflict rendered in striking animation
Vi and Jinx are sisters caught on opposing sides of a conflict between Piltover and Zaun, in a story set in the League of Legends universe. The political divide and family rupture give newcomers a way into the series without needing to play the game. The Week quotes Empire critic Kambole Campbell describing its animation as a “fascinating collision of style,” combining traditional animation with computer-generated 3D. Netflix Tudum describes Arcane as a two-season series, making it a finite option for viewers who prefer a serialized story with a defined scope.
Harley Quinn: superhero satire with a dated critical milestone
Harley Quinn puts its titular antiheroine at the center of an energetic, humorous take on superhero life. It also has a notable historical critical result: Rotten Tomatoes’ 2020 guide ranked season two second among its Best-Reviewed Animated Series, reporting a 100% adjusted Tomatometer score as of December 31, 2020. That is a season-specific figure from that date, not a current score for the full series or evidence of universal agreement.

Central Park: an animated comedy that sings
For viewers who want songs as part of the storytelling, Central Park follows a family and the people around them in a New York setting, using musical numbers alongside ensemble comedy. Rotten Tomatoes’ 2020 guide ranked season one third among its Best-Reviewed Animated Series and reported a 94% adjusted Tomatometer score as of December 31, 2020. Its consensus praised the show’s warmth, wit, ensemble, and musical affection for New York; that score, like Harley Quinn’s, is a historical season-specific result rather than a current rating.
How to choose your first episode
- For sharp or abrasive comedy: start with The Boondocks; choose Archer if you prefer workplace banter wrapped around a spy premise.
- For warmth: try Bob’s Burgers for family sitcom rhythms or Central Park if you want songs woven into the comedy.
- For emotional weight: Adventure Time offers an all-ages route into themes of loss and change; BoJack Horseman takes a more adult, often painful approach.
- For a larger dramatic arc: Arcane pairs a family story with political conflict and a distinctive visual style.
- For superhero parody: Harley Quinn centers its comedy on an antiheroine rather than treating animation as a synonym for children’s fare.
Where to watch
Streaming catalogs vary by country and change over time, so there is no reliable universal platform list here. Check the services available in your region before settling on a show. Adventure Time is the clearest qualification to the “adult animation” label: it is all-ages, while still offering themes that many adult viewers may appreciate.
