But not every mystery gets a definitive explanation. Some apparent “plot holes” are intentional ambiguities or unexplained details, not proven contradictions in the story. Here are seven questions that remain open or may look unresolved, with the distinction made clear.
Are these really plot holes?
A plot hole is a contradiction between established facts in a story. A mystery the show leaves unexplained, an event that happens off-screen, or an ending open to interpretation is not automatically a continuity error. The creators have confirmed that they deliberately left some uncertainty in place, and said a planned spinoff would connect with some lingering questions while telling its own story and mythology. That does not mean the spinoff will answer every question below—or that each one is a plot hole.
The seven entries here are best read as unresolved questions and possible loose ends, not seven verified continuity mistakes.
1. Is Eleven dead?
The finale presents Eleven’s apparent sacrifice, while Mike offers another possibility: that she survived and left. The series does not confirm which account is true. Matt Duffer told TheWrap on January 1, 2026, “We want to leave her fate up to the audience.” He said the question was the most debated plot point in the Season 5 writers’ room.

- In 1980s Indiana a group of friends witness supernatural forces and government exploits. In searching for answers, they unravel a series of mysteries.
Duffer also tied Eleven’s absence from the closing basement scene to the story’s themes and to the danger her existence could pose to other children. This is intentional ambiguity, not evidence that the finale forgot to resolve her fate.
2. What was the rock connected to Henry’s powers?
The rock associated with Henry’s powers and his connection to the Mind Flayer remains unexplained in the series. Asked about it, the Duffers said they did not want to answer that question specifically “yet.” Duffer said a planned spinoff would connect with and answer some questions not fully resolved in the finale, but would have its own story and mythology; he added that it was not about the Mind Flayer per se.

- In 1980s Indiana a group of friends witness supernatural forces and government exploits. In searching for answers, they unravel a series of mysteries.
That leaves two limits on what can be concluded: the interview does not promise the spinoff will explain this particular rock, and it gives no release timeline. The open question is real; a future answer is not guaranteed.
3. Why is Eleven absent from the final basement scene?
The closing scene follows the friends as they finish one last Dungeons & Dragons campaign in the Wheelers’ basement, but Eleven is not there. Read in isolation, her absence can look like a missing piece of the reunion. The Duffers described it as a deliberate choice: Eleven represents the group’s childhood magic, and her presence could put other children at risk.

The scene is also a farewell to the childhood world the original friends shared. Netflix’s interview with the Duffers, published January 2, 2026, describes the game as a planned bookend. The absence is therefore part of the ending’s design, not a confirmed continuity error.
4. What does the D&D game say about whether the story is over?
The party’s final game can invite speculation that the characters’ lives—or the series’ supernatural story—must continue beyond what viewers see. The Duffers said the basement sequence had been planned for a long time and was meant to show the friends saying goodbye to childhood. The next generation taking up the game suggests that life continues, while this group’s story has ended.

That is a thematic conclusion rather than a new clue that requires a plot explanation. It answers what the scene means emotionally, without claiming to settle every supernatural question in the wider world.

The stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow provides additional context for Henry’s backstory, including the question of whether he fought or embraced the Mind Flayer after their connection. That makes it useful to viewers who want more context, but it should not be treated as a missing episode required to understand Season 5.

- A love letter to the ‘80s classic genre films that captivated a generation, STRANGER THINGS is a thrilling drama set in the seemingly normal Midwestern town of Hawkins, Indiana.
Matt Duffer described the play as “its own standalone piece” in Netflix’s January 2, 2026 interview, and said it was not essential viewing for the season. It supplies optional background, not proof that the television series itself resolved every part of Henry’s story.
6. What other lingering questions might the spinoff address?
The Duffers said the planned spinoff would connect to and answer some lingering questions left by the finale, while building its own mythology. They did not provide a list of which questions it would answer. So it is reasonable to expect some continuity with the world of Stranger Things, but not to assume that every open thread will be picked up—or that the spinoff will function as a direct continuation of the original group’s story.
In particular, the creators’ general comment does not confirm an answer to the rock question, a definitive account of Eleven’s fate, or any other specific mystery. Until they identify the questions, those remain unresolved.
7. Does the finale leave a demonstrated continuity contradiction?
The documented open questions above do not, by themselves, establish a contradiction. Eleven’s fate is explicitly left to viewers; the rock is deliberately unanswered for now; the closing game is described as a planned thematic bookend; and the play offers optional context. These are different kinds of uncertainty, not a single category of plot hole.

A claim that there are seven definite continuity errors would require episode-by-episode evidence of conflicting facts. The available creator comments support a more careful verdict: several unanswered questions remain, but the best-documented examples are intentional ambiguity or withheld explanation rather than proven logic failures.
