The best Wuthering Heights adaptation depends on what you want from Emily Brontë’s story. William Wyler’s 1939 film is the landmark Hollywood version; the 2009 miniseries offers a more full-bodied account in television format; Andrea Arnold’s 2011 film strips away much of the romance. This ranking weighs cultural influence, style, and how much of the novel each version attempts—not an objective consensus about which is best.

How to choose an adaptation

Screen versions often focus on Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff, leaving out the later family story and second generation that shape the novel’s latter half. The differences matter: a film can be compelling on its own terms while telling only part of Brontë’s story. The picks below are ranked as editorial recommendations, with each suited to a different viewing preference.

  • For a classic Hollywood interpretation: the 1939 film.
  • For a compact, comparatively full-bodied account: the 2009 miniseries.
  • For a gritty, sensorial reinvention: Andrea Arnold’s 2011 film.
  • For a version that reaches into the second generation: the 1992 film.
  • For a different national cinema and style: Buñuel’s Mexican reinterpretation.
  • For the current adaptation: Emerald Fennell’s 2026 film.

The seven adaptations, ranked

1. Wuthering Heights (1939), directed by William Wyler

The strongest starting point if you want to see how Hollywood turned Brontë’s novel into a romantic classic. Laurence Olivier and Merle Oberon lead the central love story, and Film at Lincoln Center describes them as ideally cast while calling the film widely considered definitive (Film at Lincoln Center).

That status comes with a major qualification: the film concentrates on Catherine and Heathcliff and omits large portions of the later story. It is influential, but it is not a full-screen version of the novel’s revenge-and-family arc (Associated Press; TIME). Choose it for the classic interpretation, not for a complete account.

2. Wuthering Heights (2009), television miniseries

For viewers who want more room for the novel than a feature film usually allows, the 2009 miniseries is a sound choice. TIME’s ranking writer praises it as a compact but comparatively full-bodied adaptation (TIME). That is a relative recommendation, not a claim that it reproduces every scene or detail.

3. Wuthering Heights (2011), directed by Andrea Arnold

Arnold’s film is the pick for a harsh, physical and less romanticized experience. Film at Lincoln Center characterizes it as kitchen-sink realism with a richly sensorial style (Film at Lincoln Center). Rather than treating the novel primarily as a sweeping romance, this interpretation foregrounds its roughness and atmosphere.

4. Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights (1992), directed by Peter Kosminsky

The 1992 film is worth choosing if you want a prominent cast and a screen version that attempts to include the novel’s second generation. That later family story is often absent from the best-known adaptations (Associated Press; TIME).

A feature film still has limited time to carry the whole book, so broader coverage does not mean every part receives equal space. Its particular value is in reaching beyond the central lovers.

5. Wuthering Heights (1970), directed by Robert Fuest

Timothy Dalton and Anna Calder-Marshall star in this darker interpretation. TIME points to its psychosexual undertones, making it a useful alternative if you want the story approached as psychologically charged rather than as a conventional romantic tragedy (TIME). Film Education also records it as part of the screen adaptation history (Film Education).

6. Abismos de Pasión (1954), directed by Luis Buñuel

Buñuel’s Mexican adaptation is the most distinctive national-cinema detour on this list. Its setting and style offer a different way into the story than the familiar British-period and Hollywood treatments. Film Education identifies it as an adaptation set in Mexico (Film Education). Choose it for the reinterpretation, rather than expecting a straightforward reproduction of the novel.

7. Wuthering Heights (2026), written and directed by Emerald Fennell

Fennell’s film is the current screen adaptation to seek out, but it is one interpretation among many—not a replacement that makes earlier versions obsolete. Warner Bros.’ official page lists a U.S. theatrical release date of February 13, 2026, and international release beginning February 11; its current home page advertises digital and 4K Ultra HD availability (Warner Bros.). Which versions include more of the novel?

The 1939 film is a landmark, but its focus on the central lovers means it leaves out much of the latter story. The 1992 film is among the versions noted for attempting to include the second generation, while the 2009 miniseries is recommended by TIME for a comparatively full-bodied account. Neither description establishes a scene-by-scene measure of fidelity, and a broader scope can still be compressed on screen.

If you want to compare adaptations with the book, pay attention to whether the story continues beyond Catherine and Heathcliff. The later generation changes the shape of the novel: the work is not only a tragic love story but also a revenge and family story. Film and television versions make different choices about how much of that structure to preserve.

Earlier screen versions worth knowing about

The adaptation history stretches beyond these seven picks. Film at Lincoln Center’s program includes a 1953 television version, and historical coverage notes a 1920 silent adaptation that is now described as lost (Film at Lincoln Center; TIME). They provide context for the story’s long screen life, but are not practical alternatives to the available versions ranked above.
