It’s a Wonderful Life is the best Christmas movie ever made, but the strongest holiday canon is much wider than one kind of seasonal story. This ranking weighs film quality, how centrally Christmas shapes the movie, cultural and historical staying power, rewatchability, and the range of holiday experiences represented—from family animation and old Hollywood romance to horror, action, international cinema, and Christmas-adjacent dramas.
The list is an editorial judgment, not a universal formula. Rotten Tomatoes’ holiday guide is principally organized by Tomatometer results, while AFI presents its lists as collective judgments meant to encourage discussion. Those are useful reference points, but they do not determine this order. Most entries are feature films; the television and streaming specials are labeled explicitly because they have become enduring parts of Christmas viewing culture.

How the ranking works
A great Christmas movie should do more than contain a decorated tree or a scene set in December. The best entries use the holiday to intensify their central ideas: belief, generosity, loneliness, homecoming, family pressure, romance, grief, social obligation, or the hope of starting again.
- Film quality: direction, writing, performances, design, music, and control of tone.
- Christmas centrality: whether the holiday is essential to the story’s identity rather than merely a background date.
- Cultural and historical staying power: influence, preservation, annual traditions, and lasting recognition.
- Rewatchability: the pleasure of returning to the movie, whether for comfort, comedy, suspense, or discovery.
- Range: a useful Christmas canon should include different eras, countries, genres, audiences, and emotional registers.
Availability changes by country, platform, date, and edition. Check a current local listing, library catalog, digital storefront, or physical-media retailer before planning a particular screening.

-
It’s a Wonderful Life (1946) — classic, drama, fantasy
Frank Capra’s Christmas redemption story remains the standard because it takes despair seriously before earning its celebration. George Bailey’s crisis is not solved by a magical shortcut; the film argues that an ordinary person’s sacrifices, relationships, and local commitments constitute a meaningful life.
Its emotional directness is supported by assured visual storytelling and a community-centered climax that has become one of cinema’s defining holiday sequences. The film appears in the Library of Congress National Film Registry and is prominent in AFI’s major lists, including its recognition as an especially inspiring American film. AFI’s overview provides useful institutional context. For viewers who want to revisit the number-one film without depending on changing digital listings, compare an It’s a Wonderful Life Blu-ray or 4K edition; exact editions, regional compatibility, price, and stock should be checked before buying.
-
The Shop Around the Corner (1940) — classic, romance
Ernst Lubitsch’s elegant workplace romance is warm without becoming sugary. Two employees who dislike each other in person fall in love through anonymous letters, and the Christmas season becomes a period of emotional revelation rather than a decorative backdrop. Its wit, restraint, and humane view of romantic disappointment make it one of the finest less-obvious choices on the list.

Home Alone (1990) — family, comedy
Chris Columbus and John Hughes build a nearly perfect holiday comedy out of a child’s fantasy of independence. Kevin’s elaborate defenses against the burglars are inventive slapstick, but the movie works because the jokes are anchored by loneliness, family reconciliation, a memorable John Williams score, and richly recognizable suburban Christmas imagery.
Its annual cultural durability is unusually strong, and its selection for the National Film Registry in 2023 reinforces its place in American film culture. It is both a top-tier family crowd-pleaser and a carefully engineered comedy.
-
Meet Me in St. Louis (1944) — classic, musical, family
Vincente Minnelli’s four-season family musical is not exclusively a Christmas movie, but its Christmas section is so emotionally complete that it has become central to the film’s holiday identity. Judy Garland’s performance, the family’s tensions over a possible move, and the song Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas create a mood of tenderness shadowed by uncertainty.
AFI recognizes the film among the great American musicals and specifically highlights its Christmas sequence. It earns a high place here because it captures the holiday as both domestic comfort and the fear that familiar life may change.

Miracle on 34th Street (1947) — classic, family, fantasy
This department-store and courtroom fable turns the question of whether Santa Claus exists into a broader argument about trust, commercial culture, and the usefulness of believing in other people. Its New York setting gives the fantasy a practical, bustling texture, while Edmund Gwenn’s Kris Kringle supplies kindness without simple-mindedness.
The film remains a durable choice for mixed-age viewing, and AFI places it ninth on its 100 Years…100 Cheers list. Its appeal comes from balancing institutional skepticism with a generous belief in human decency.
-
The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) — animation, fantasy, family
Henry Selick’s stop-motion feature, shaped by Tim Burton’s visual imagination and Danny Elfman’s songs, makes the collision of Halloween and Christmas feel like a complete mythology rather than a gimmick. Jack Skellington’s attempt to take over Christmas produces visual invention, musical momentum, and a surprisingly gentle lesson about respecting another world’s traditions.
The film’s elaborate handmade craft and unusual emotional atmosphere have made it a major piece of animation culture. Its addition to the National Film Registry in 2023 confirms its lasting significance, though preservation recognition is not the same thing as a universal ranking of holiday enjoyment.

A Christmas Carol (1951) — classic, fantasy, drama
Alastair Sim gives Ebenezer Scrooge an extraordinary mixture of cruelty, fear, intelligence, and wounded humanity. This adaptation of Charles Dickens’s familiar moral tale understands that the transformation matters only if the misery preceding it feels real. The ghosts are atmospheric, but the film’s lasting power comes from the precision of Sim’s emotional turn.
-
Elf (2003) — comedy, family
Will Ferrell’s total commitment to Buddy’s childlike sincerity carries an accessible fish-out-of-water comedy through New York department stores, office culture, family estrangement, and a modern belief-in-Christmas theme. The movie is broad, but its central joke—that innocence can be socially disruptive and emotionally restorative at the same time—holds together.
Among 21st-century studio Christmas comedies, few have become more dependable annual rewatches. Its songs, candy-colored production design, and escalating public displays of belief give it a strong visual identity.
-
A Christmas Story (1983) — family, comedy
Ralphie’s determined campaign for a Red Ryder BB gun captures childhood Christmas as a combination of wonder, embarrassment, anticipation, and adult absurdity. The deadpan narration and precisely observed family humiliations make the film feel less like a fantasy of perfect Christmas than a comic memory of how intensely children experience small events.

Its specific details—the leg lamp, the school decoder, the humiliating winter clothing—are exactly what make it so rewatchable. AFI includes it in its holiday guide, and its status as a recurring seasonal favorite is well established.
-
The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992) — family, musical, adaptation
This is one of the rare Dickens adaptations that is both genuinely faithful and unmistakably itself. Michael Caine plays Scrooge with straight-faced seriousness while the Muppets provide warmth, comic timing, and a chorus of memorable songs. The result preserves the story’s melancholy and moral force instead of treating it as disposable children’s entertainment.
It is an especially strong choice for families watching across generations: younger viewers get the puppetry and jokes, while adults can appreciate how carefully the adaptation handles regret, poverty, and redemption.
Ranks 11–30: essential rewatches and distinctive holiday worlds
-
Die Hard (1988) — action, Christmas-adjacent
John McClane’s siege at a Los Angeles office party is an action classic, but Christmas is woven into its identity through decorations, carols, gifts, family separation, and the theme of getting home. It is not a family fantasy, yet the holiday setting gives the violence and homecoming story its particular contrast and atmosphere.

White Christmas (1954) — classic, musical, romance
This lush Irving Berlin musical combines performance, friendship, romance, postwar nostalgia, and Technicolor spectacle. Its title song is inseparable from the season, but the film’s real appeal is the pleasure of watching performers build a show, a partnership, and eventually a shared home.
-
Scrooged (1988) — comedy, fantasy
Bill Murray’s abrasive television executive turns Dickens’s redemption story into a fast, cynical media satire. The film’s sentiment works because Frank Cross has to confront the damage caused by his own appetites and indifference; the transformation is noisy, funny, and more earned than its premise might suggest.
-
The Holdovers (2023) — drama, Christmas break
Alexander Payne’s winter dramedy follows a teacher, a student, and a school cook left behind at a New England boarding school during the Christmas break. The holiday does not simply decorate the story: the enforced pause exposes loneliness, grief, class difference, and the possibility of an improvised family.
-
Love Actually (2003) — romance, ensemble comedy
Richard Curtis’s interlocking Christmas romances are uneven in tone and quality, but their warmth, music, familiar rituals, and large ensemble make the film exceptionally rewatchable. Its place in modern holiday culture is secure even for viewers who prefer to debate which of its storylines has aged best.

Klaus (2019) — animation, family, fantasy
Painterly 2D-inspired animation gives this Santa origin story a distinctive visual richness. Its strongest idea is that generosity can become a tradition through repetition: one kind act changes a relationship, which changes a town, which eventually creates a legend.
-
National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989) — comedy, family dysfunction
Clark Griswold’s campaign for the perfect family Christmas becomes an anatomy of consumer pressure, obligation, and suburban excess. Chevy Chase’s increasingly desperate performance keeps the escalating disasters connected to a recognizable fear: that the ideal holiday is always one more purchase, decoration, or performance away.
-
The Bishop’s Wife (1947) — classic, fantasy, romance
Cary Grant, Loretta Young, and David Niven bring sophistication to a Christmas fantasy about a bishop who has lost sight of his marriage and community. The supernatural premise matters less than the film’s gentle insistence that attention, service, and affection are forms of spiritual work.
-
Carol (2015) — romance, drama, winter
Todd Haynes’s restrained adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s novel uses Christmas shopping, gifts, travel, and social rituals as the emotional architecture of a forbidden romance. Its period detail and visual exactness make the season feel beautiful but restrictive, a public performance surrounding private longing.

Gremlins (1984) — horror, comedy, Christmas
This clever creature feature turns domestic comfort and seasonal consumerism into the setup for chaos. The rules governing Gizmo and the mogwai are playful, but the film’s darker streak—along with its violence and unsettling imagery—means it belongs with older children and adults rather than very young viewers.
-
Black Christmas (1974) — horror, slasher
One of the foundational slashers, Bob Clark’s film makes the Christmas setting actively frightening. Carols, decorations, an isolated sorority house, and the expectation of communal celebration become sources of vulnerability. Its suspense and atmosphere are the point; this is an adult horror selection, not a festive family movie.
-
The Apartment (1960) — classic, romance, drama
Billy Wilder’s bittersweet story moves through Christmas and New Year’s while examining corporate exploitation, loneliness, sexual politics, and moral courage. Its tonal control is exceptional: the comedy never erases the sadness, and the romance feels meaningful because the characters must first decide what kind of people they want to be.
Rank #3
-
Tokyo Godfathers (2003) — animation, international, drama
Satoshi Kon follows three unhoused people who discover an abandoned baby on Christmas Eve. The film is darkly comic, humane, and structurally inventive, using the holiday as a framework for coincidence, memory, responsibility, and unexpected solidarity. It broadens the Christmas canon beyond conventional American sentiment.

Arthur Christmas (2011) — animation, family, comedy
This energetic animated film imagines Santa’s operation as a vast logistics machine and then asks whether efficiency is enough. Arthur’s compassion gives the large-scale technology and slapstick a clear emotional center: every child matters, even when the system has marked one delivery as expendable.
-
The Santa Clause (1994) — family, comedy, fantasy
Tim Allen’s high-concept family comedy treats becoming Santa as an absurd job transfer with surprisingly meaningful consequences. The physical changes and workplace complications provide the jokes, while the story’s emotional stakes come from a father trying to rebuild trust with his son.
-
Bad Santa (2003) — dark comedy, adult
Billy Bob Thornton plays a criminal mall Santa whose cynical routine is disrupted by a lonely child. The film is crude and bleak, but its redemption works precisely because it is not automatic or polished. The language, sexual content, and violence make it strictly an adult Christmas comedy.
-
The Holiday (2006) — romance, comedy
Two women exchange homes over the holidays and find new possibilities in snowy England and sunny Los Angeles. The film is polished and sentimental, but its appeal is durable: appealing performances, seasonal interiors, parallel stories about starting over, and a structure built for repeat viewing.

The Polar Express (2004) — animation, family, fantasy
Its motion-capture visuals remain divisive, yet the film’s train-journey structure, sound design, winter atmosphere, and focus on childlike belief have made it a persistent family choice. It works best for viewers willing to accept its uncanny visual style as part of the dream.
-
Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964) — television special, animation, family
This stop-motion special is one of the most recognizable Christmas screen texts. Its songs, handmade designs, annual broadcast tradition, and outsider narrative have given it unusual endurance, even as modern viewers may notice that some of its social lessons are more complicated than the cheerful presentation suggests.
-
A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965) — television special, animation, family
Its spare visual style, Vince Guaraldi’s jazz score, and melancholy critique of commercialism make it unlike louder holiday fare. Charlie Brown’s small tree and the children’s eventual communal response create a modest, sincere Christmas mood without needing elaborate spectacle.
-
How the Grinch Stole Christmas! (1966) — television special, animation, family
Chuck Jones’s economical animation perfectly matches Dr. Seuss’s rhythmic moral fable. The Grinch’s transformation is conveyed through shape, movement, color, and timing as much as dialogue, which is why the special remains so difficult to improve upon.

Ranks 31–60: from modern favorites to unconventional Christmas viewing
-
How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) — family, comedy, fantasy
Ron Howard’s live-action adaptation is a maximalist companion to the 1966 special rather than a replacement for it. The production design is elaborate and Jim Carrey commits completely to the grotesque comic performance, making this a flamboyant choice for viewers who prefer spectacle.
-
The Christmas Chronicles (2018) — family, adventure
Kurt Russell’s charismatic Santa gives this streaming-era family adventure its strongest asset. The story moves briskly through a night of mishaps while keeping its focus on grief, siblings, and the effort to restore a family’s sense of wonder.
-
Jingle All the Way (1996) — comedy, consumer satire
Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sinbad turn the search for a sold-out toy into a broad but recognizable satire of last-minute shopping panic. Beneath the chase comedy is a pointed portrait of parental performance: the gift becomes a test of whether an overworked parent has done enough.
-
While You Were Sleeping (1995) — romance, comedy
Christmas and New Year’s give this romantic comedy its snowy, communal atmosphere, while Sandra Bullock supplies the warmth that keeps its mistaken-identity premise appealing. The family’s holiday rituals become an inviting contrast to the protagonist’s isolation.

Last Christmas (2019) — romance, drama
Set in London during the holiday season, this contemporary romance combines a conventional love story with immigrant-family dynamics, social conscience, and a late structural turn. Its seasonal surface conceals a more serious interest in generosity, recovery, and how people choose to participate in a community.
-
The Family Stone (2005) — drama, comedy, family
This Christmas gathering is deliberately uncomfortable. Grief, romance, family judgment, illness, and competing ideas of belonging sit alongside the seasonal rituals, offering a messier alternative to movies where everyone effortlessly achieves holiday harmony.
Rank #4
-
Four Christmases (2008) — comedy, family dysfunction
A couple who normally avoid their families are forced to visit four separate Christmas celebrations in one day. Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon generate the central friction, while each gathering exposes a different version of obligation, resentment, and family tradition.
-
Trading Places (1983) — comedy, Christmas-adjacent
Christmas and New Year’s frame this sharp class satire about wealth, identity, and exploitation. Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd’s role reversal supplies the comedy, but the film’s real subject is how easily institutions treat human lives as variables in a financial experiment.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005) — noir comedy, Christmas-adjacent
This fast, self-aware Los Angeles mystery uses Christmas lights and seasonal parties as a bright contrast to murder, deception, and abrasive buddy chemistry. Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer’s rhythms make it a strong option for viewers who want holiday atmosphere without holiday sweetness.
-
Batman Returns (1992) — superhero, Christmas-adjacent
Tim Burton’s gothic Gotham is covered in snow, trees, lights, and public Christmas spectacle. The holiday imagery intensifies the film’s themes of loneliness, performance, exclusion, and damaged people searching for connection, making it more genuinely Christmas-adjacent than a random movie set in December.
-
Edward Scissorhands (1990) — fantasy, Christmas-adjacent
Its suburban Christmas climax turns a fairy tale about exclusion into a melancholy seasonal fable. Handmade sculptures, artificial snow, neighborhood conformity, and the film’s visual contrast between the outsider and the community give the holiday imagery lasting emotional force.
-
Tangerine (2015) — drama, Christmas Eve, adult
Sean Baker’s kinetic film follows two friends across Los Angeles on Christmas Eve, offering an unsentimental counterpoint to idealized holiday cinema. Its energy, humor, adult themes, language, and social texture make it a vivid choice for mature viewers seeking a Christmas story outside the usual middle-class domestic setting.

A Christmas Tale (2008) — French drama, family
Arnaud Desplechin uses a holiday reunion to examine illness, resentment, memory, sibling conflict, and the possibility of reconciliation. It is less a comfort movie than a searching family drama in which Christmas creates the pressure for people to confront relationships they might otherwise avoid.
-
Christmas in Connecticut (1944) — classic, screwball comedy
A food writer who has invented an ideal domestic life must perform that fantasy when a publisher sends a guest to her supposed Connecticut home. The result is a sparkling comedy about food, deception, domestic perfection, and the impossible pressure to stage an impeccable Christmas.
-
Holiday Inn (1942) — classic, musical, historical context advised
This seasonal musical is historically important for its Irving Berlin score and for introducing White Christmas. It also contains dated racial material that requires explicit context and should not be presented uncritically. Its place here reflects musical and film history, not an endorsement of every element.
-
The Preacher’s Wife (1996) — fantasy, musical, family
This contemporary angel story benefits from Denzel Washington, Whitney Houston, and a community-centered Christmas setting. Its musical performances and emphasis on a congregation under pressure give the familiar supernatural premise a warm social dimension.

The Best Man Holiday (2013) — ensemble drama, family
A group of college friends reunites for Christmas, bringing comedy, romance, old rivalries, grief, and friendship into the same house. The movie’s explicit holiday rituals create space for both celebration and mourning, and its ensemble approach gives Christmas a communal rather than purely romantic meaning.
-
Almost Christmas (2016) — family, comedy, drama
A multigenerational family gathers for its first Christmas after a major loss. The ensemble performances are the main attraction, while faith, grief, romantic complications, and reconciliation give the familiar holiday-gathering format emotional weight.
-
Happiest Season (2020) — romance, comedy, LGBTQ+ holiday film
This modern holiday romance places queer identity, family acceptance, and the pressure to perform festive happiness at the center of its story. Its appeal comes from bringing a familiar Christmas-homecoming structure into direct contact with the fear of not being accepted by the people whose approval matters most.
-
A Boy Called Christmas (2021) — family, fantasy, adventure
This visually rich family fantasy blends folklore, grief, adventure, talking animals, and the origin-story tradition associated with Santa. It is a good choice for viewers who want a storybook Christmas quest with a stronger emphasis on loss and courage than on comedy.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special (2022) — streaming special, superhero, musical
This compact Marvel special works best as a character-focused seasonal extra rather than a standalone cinematic classic. Its music-driven plot, comic sincerity, and attention to found family make it an enjoyable holiday interlude for viewers already invested in the Guardians.
-
Spirited (2022) — musical, comedy, adaptation
This large-scale reworking of A Christmas Carol uses energetic production numbers and a knowingly contemporary comic sensibility. It is more interested in expanding the Dickens machinery than in quietly reproducing it, and its best moments come from the tension between spectacle and sincere moral change.
-
Violent Night (2022) — action, horror, adult
David Harbour’s Santa is dropped into an extreme action-horror version of Christmas, where holiday iconography becomes genre spectacle. The premise is deliberately excessive, and the violence means it belongs with adult action audiences rather than children looking for a traditional Santa film.

Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale (2010) — Finnish fantasy, horror
This Finnish dark fantasy excavates the frightening folklore beneath the polished Santa image. Its chilly atmosphere, strange mythology, and unsettling humor make it an excellent alternative for viewers who want Christmas to feel ancient, eerie, and unpredictable.
-
Anna and the Apocalypse (2017) — musical, zombie horror, young adult
A zombie musical sounds like a novelty, but this film finds real seasonal invention in its combination of teen coming-of-age, Christmas songs, friendship, and survival horror. It is energetic and tuneful while still carrying genuine danger, grief, and adult-level violence.
-
The Ref (1994) — dark comedy, family dysfunction
A burglar who takes a couple hostage becomes an unwilling referee for their vicious Christmas arguments. The film’s appeal lies in its caustic dialogue and anti-sentimental view of family conflict: the holiday does not make these people nicer, but it does trap them together long enough to expose the truth.
-
The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996) — action thriller, Christmas-adjacent
This snowbound action thriller gives its amnesiac heroine a strong transformation arc amid family stakes, holiday decorations, and winter danger. It is best recommended to viewers who want Christmas atmosphere and seasonal imagery without conventional cheer.

The Holiday Affair (1949) — classic, romance
This modest but charming romantic comedy explores consumer culture, integrity, and second chances through a department-store encounter. It is a deeper-cut classic whose appeal comes from its low-key warmth and its skepticism toward the idea that Christmas happiness can simply be purchased.
Why these movies belong in the Christmas canon
The strongest entries do not all look alike. It’s a Wonderful Life and The Bishop’s Wife treat Christmas as a chance for spiritual and emotional correction. The Shop Around the Corner, Carol, The Holiday, and While You Were Sleeping use seasonal rituals to create romantic possibility. Home Alone, Elf, The Muppet Christmas Carol, and Arthur Christmas turn family viewing into comedy without discarding tenderness.
The darker titles use Christmas differently. Black Christmas makes familiar communal symbols threatening. Gremlins turns consumer desire and domestic comfort into creature-feature chaos. Die Hard, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Batman Returns, and The Long Kiss Goodnight use holiday imagery to sharpen action and noir contrasts. Tangerine, Tokyo Godfathers, and A Christmas Tale challenge the assumption that Christmas stories must take place inside prosperous, harmonious homes.
Several entries also have unusually strong institutional or historical support. It’s a Wonderful Life has National Film Registry preservation and prominent AFI recognition; Home Alone and The Nightmare Before Christmas joined the registry in 2023; Meet Me in St. Louis is recognized as a major musical; and Holiday Inn is historically important for the cinematic introduction of White Christmas. Those distinctions support inclusion and context, but they are not direct measurements of how much a particular household will enjoy a movie.
How to choose from the list
| If you want… | Start with… |
|---|---|
| A definitive emotional classic | It’s a Wonderful Life or A Christmas Carol |
| A family comedy | Home Alone, Elf, or The Muppet Christmas Carol |
| A short animated tradition | A Charlie Brown Christmas, How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, or Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer |
| Old Hollywood glamour | The Shop Around the Corner, Meet Me in St. Louis, or White Christmas |
| A romance | Carol, The Holiday, or While You Were Sleeping |
| A dysfunctional family gathering | The Family Stone, Almost Christmas, or The Ref |
| Christmas action | Die Hard, The Long Kiss Goodnight, or Violent Night |
| Christmas horror | Black Christmas, Gremlins, or Rare Exports |
| An international or unconventional perspective | Tokyo Godfathers, Tangerine, or A Christmas Tale |
Physical media and viewing notes
For a film you expect to watch every year, physical media can be more dependable than a changing digital catalog. Paramount’s official page for It’s a Wonderful Life lists DVD, Blu-ray, 4K Ultra HD, and digital viewing options, but the exact release and regional availability should be confirmed before purchase. Similar physical-media searches may make sense for Home Alone or The Muppet Christmas Carol, especially for families and collectors, but edition features and compatibility vary.
Do not assume that a title is available on a particular streaming service simply because it was available there in a previous holiday season. The same caution applies to television specials, which may move between broadcast, digital, and physical formats. If a movie is unavailable in your territory, a local library, repertory cinema, broadcaster, or legitimate digital storefront may offer another route.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Die Hard really a Christmas movie?
Yes, under a broad but defensible definition. Christmas is central to the setting, imagery, music, family separation, office-party premise, and McClane’s desire to get home. It is best labeled a Christmas-adjacent action movie rather than a conventional family Christmas film.
Which movies on the list are television or streaming specials?
Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, A Charlie Brown Christmas, and the 1966 How the Grinch Stole Christmas! are television specials. The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is a streaming special. They are included because annual and seasonal viewing traditions have made them enduring screen texts, but their formats are labeled in the ranking.

One-click scans. No signup required.
Are these movies available to stream?
Availability changes by territory, date, platform, and licensing agreement, so this ranking does not promise a current streaming home for any title. Check a current local streaming guide, digital storefront, library catalog, broadcaster listing, or physical-media retailer before scheduling a movie night.
What is the best Christmas movie for children?
For younger viewers, begin with How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, A Charlie Brown Christmas, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Arthur Christmas, or The Muppet Christmas Carol, depending on attention span and age. Gremlins, Black Christmas, Bad Santa, Violent Night, and several other darker entries are intended for older audiences.
The Bottom Line
The best overall choice is It’s a Wonderful Life, but the best Christmas movie for a particular night depends on the mood. Choose Home Alone or Elf for broad family comedy, The Shop Around the Corner or Carol for romance, A Charlie Brown Christmas for quiet melancholy, and Die Hard or Black Christmas when holiday atmosphere works better with action or fear. The canon is strongest when it makes room for all of those traditions.
