Long before that mission, Jules Verne imagined a voyage from Earth to the Moon—but his fictional cannon launch and lunar-orbit story were very different from Apollo’s real landing and return. The claim that Leonardo da Vinci envisioned space travel needs a specific, authoritative source; flight ideas alone do not establish a vision of leaving Earth.
What happened on Apollo 11?
NASA identifies Apollo 11’s primary objective as a crewed lunar landing and return to Earth. The mission launched on July 16, 1969; the lunar landing followed on July 20, and the crew splashed down on July 24. These were separate milestones in one mission, not competing dates for the anniversary. NASA’s Apollo 11 mission record documents its objective, launch, and splashdown, while its 50th-anniversary account marks the landing date.
What did Jules Verne imagine?
From the Earth to the Moon (1865)
In his 1865 novel, Verne sent fictional travelers toward the Moon using an enormous cannon. NASA’s history publication Exploring the Unknown, Volume I describes the cannon as the story’s launch mechanism. It is a literary device, not a working model of Apollo’s propulsion or evidence that Verne supplied the mission’s engineering design.
The sequel (1870)
Verne’s 1870 sequel continues the imagined voyage, taking its characters into lunar orbit rather than onto the Moon’s surface. That distinction matters: the stories pictured travel toward and around the Moon, while Apollo 11’s stated goal included landing and returning its crew to Earth.

How did the fictional voyage differ from Apollo?
| Journey | Launch or propulsion | Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Verne, From the Earth to the Moon (1865) | A giant cannon, as described by NASA’s history publication | A fictional journey from Earth toward the Moon |
| Verne’s sequel (1870) | NASA’s account describes the lunar voyage but does not state a comparable Apollo-style propulsion system | Lunar orbit; the characters do not land |
| Apollo 11 (1969) | NASA’s mission page records the mission but does not provide a propulsion comparison in the cited account | Crewed lunar landing and return to Earth; launched July 16 and splashed down July 24 |
The comparison is cultural and conceptual, not a claim of direct technical lineage. A novel can make a destination imaginable without providing the design for a later spacecraft. Apollo’s significance lies in the documented mission: it carried a crew to a lunar landing and brought them back.
Did Leonardo da Vinci envision space travel?
The claim needs a named drawing or text and an authoritative source explaining why it qualifies as a space-travel concept. The sources cited here establish no such connection. Da Vinci’s association with ideas about human flight, by itself, does not show that he imagined leaving Earth. It is therefore more accurate to discuss Verne’s documented lunar fiction without presenting the da Vinci attribution as established fact.
