Star Trek: Lower Decks season five revisits the blue Orionians, a group whose earlier screen appearance was in the animated episode “The Pirates of Orion.” The return adds new context to their place in Orionian society through a story involving D’Vana Tendi and an old medical vessel.
Who are the blue Orionians?
They are a competing Orionian group distinguished by blue skin. Their identity matters because the franchise’s newer story does more than bring back a recognizable design: it places them in conflict with the Tendi house, giving the group a renewed role in Orionian family politics.
The details available in episode summaries are limited, so it is best to treat “competing group” and the conflict with the Tendi house as the broad outline rather than assume a fuller account of their history or motives.
Where did the blue Orionians appear before?
Their earlier screen appearance is identified as “The Pirates of Orion,” an episode of Star Trek: The Animated Series. That makes the Lower Decks story a franchise-history return, not their first appearance since the 1970s. The Italian-language Orionians entry identifies the animated episode and describes the blue Orionians as a rival group.

What does Lower Decks add to their story?
In Lower Decks season five, D’Vana Tendi becomes central to a plot involving an old Orionian medical vessel and blue Orionians who come into conflict with the Tendi house. The episode summary supports that broad account, but not a more detailed explanation of the dispute or the vessel’s history. The season-five episode listing provides the available summary.
The significance of the return is therefore twofold: a group from an early animated-series appearance is brought into a later story, and the new plot ties them to Tendi’s Orionian background. It is a fresh development of the group, rather than evidence that they had been absent from every intervening part of the franchise.

A related option for tabletop players
Modiphius’s Star Trek Adventures Species Sourcebook is a roleplaying supplement, not a screen-canon encyclopedia or the source of the Lower Decks storyline. The publisher describes it as providing 60 new alien-species templates for the second edition of Star Trek Adventures, with print and digital editions announced. Modiphius’s announcement gives the product details.
Modiphius says the material can also be used with other editions of Star Trek Adventures and Captain’s Log, with slight modifications to suit the game version. That makes it relevant to players building Orionian characters, but it should be kept separate from what the television episode establishes. The publisher’s scope note explains that compatibility.
